The Land of a Thousand Hills: Rwanda's Coffee Paradise

Rwanda, known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills," is characterized by mountains and plateaus throughout its territory. Most regions enjoy a tropical highland climate and tropical savanna climate, which is mild and cool. With favorable natural conditions including high altitude and fertile volcanic soil, the country's exceptionally fertile soil and suitable climate contribute to plant growth. Rwanda is one of the few countries in the world that can fully enjoy the harmony between soil, altitude, and climate. In this unique growing environment, Rwanda's high-quality coffee possesses distinctive taste and aroma.

Distinctive Flavor Profile

The flavor of Rwandan coffee is described as having "grass-like fragrance" with tropical climate characteristics. Beyond the fruity sweetness presented in this coffee, it also offers a refreshing, bright, and fresh sensation. The Bourbon coffee grown in Rwanda is acclaimed for its fruity sweetness, with a rich and full aroma that has absolutely no astringency, leaving a long-lasting aftertaste. This coffee features delicious, citrus-like sweet fragrance and has a deep chocolate color.

Cup of Excellence (COE)

The full English name of COE is: Cup of Excellence, which translates to "超凡一杯" (Extraordinary Cup) in Chinese.

COE is held once a year, where specialty coffee growers submit their best coffee beans for evaluation by domestic or international judges from this association. After at least five cuppings, the coffee beans considered to be of the highest grade will be awarded the COE designation.

Coffee bearing the COE designation can be traded at high prices in international network auctions focused on specialty coffee.

Impact on Coffee Estates

The Cup of Excellence's role in promoting coffee estates is not about increasing production, but about dramatically improving quality. From soil and water standards, to climate, cultivation, harvesting, and processing, there are very strict advancement requirements. Because COE beans can be auctioned online, the income of coffee estates can increase by multiples.

Specialty quality is the king's way, unrelated to quantity.

Rwanda's Coffee Excellence

Some people say that the world's best coffee comes from Jamaica Blue Mountain. Rwanda Aromec's premium washed Bourbon defeated Blue Mountain and won the 2008 Cup of Excellence championship.

In 2010, Rwanda became the first African country to host COE.
