Bali's "Little Sheep" Golden Coffee and the Peaberry Story

Indonesia is famous for its coffee, and Bali coffee in particular has earned a worldwide name. The island's three major coffee factories are all owned by Chinese-Indonesian entrepreneurs, and they divide primarily into Golden Coffee, Golden Rabbit Coffee, and Little Sheep Coffee.

A relative of ours recently attended a wedding in Bali, where local friends insisted she bring home DOMBA Coffee's Little Sheep Golden Coffee — and stressed, repeatedly, that it was peaberry coffee. That raised an obvious question: what exactly is a peaberry?

The ground coffee is packed in foil-lined bags to preserve freshness.

The Nature of Coffee Beans

A coffee cherry normally contains two seeds. These oblong, flat-faced beans are what the trade calls "female beans," or Type I.

Occasionally, one seed fails to develop and the other grows extra large, so the cherry matures with a single round bean inside. This oval singleton is a peaberry, or Type II.

The two are simply different growth patterns — not genders, whatever the old Chinese terminology ("male bean" and "female bean") might suggest.

Peaberries vs. Female Beans

A single coffee tree yields four grades of beans: defective beans, dead beans, female beans, and peaberries.

Defective beans and dead beans are the cheapest and end up mainly in 3-in-1 instant coffee; brewed black they taste poor, so they have to be masked with spices, sugar, and creamer.

Female beans are a grade above and form the everyday supply for chains like 85°C and Starbucks in Taiwan.

Peaberries account for only 5% of a tree's output, which is why they command a premium.

The Origin of DOMBA Golden Coffee

The name traces back to the owners of Little Sheep Golden Coffee, whose "Golden Manor" combines the grandmother's surname Jin (gold) with the owner's surname Huang (yellow).

The Little Sheep Golden Coffee tree itself is unique to Bali: two different coffee varieties are joined by grafting, with superior Arabica rootstock below and Robusta branches and leaves grafted on top.

Its beans come in both peaberry and female beans, with the peaberry the finest grade of Golden Coffee and Little Sheep's best seller. The Little Sheep factory hand-selects and roasts each bean, and that distinctive flavor and texture have made it a favorite souvenir from the island.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

For all of Bali's charm, Indonesia's most celebrated coffee still comes from Sumatra, and FrontStreet Coffee's Indonesian lineup is a great way to explore it. The FrontStreet wet-hulled Mandheling, from the Toba lake area of the Lintong region, is processed in the typical Sumatran style — hulled while half-dry, leaving the beans fully exposed as they dry, which gives the coffee its signature herbal, spicy character. Roasted medium-dark, it is low in acidity and full-bodied, with caramel, dark chocolate, and toasted bread and a long sweet finish — ideal for lovers of intense coffee. One step up sits the FrontStreet PWN Golden Mandheling: selected through strict standards for density, size, shape, and color, with machine sorting plus a round of hand-grading, it is remarkably clean and even, with sandalwood, herbs, spice, roasted hazelnut, caramel, and dark chocolate in the cup. And if the Robusta-grafted Bali story made you curious about Robusta's strengths, the FrontStreet Classic Espresso Blend adds a small proportion of Robusta and a dark roast to its Mandheling-and-Brazil base, pushing black chocolate, nut, and caramel aromas to the limit — even a beginner can pull a proper, crema-rich shot.
