Angola's Coffee Export Revenue Reaches $2 Million in 2015

The National Coffee Institute of Angola announced that coffee export revenues reached $2 million in 2015.

According to this week's report by Angola's National Newspaper, this revenue represents a 262% increase from $552,000 in 2014, and a 207% increase from $650,000 in 2013.

The growth indicates that demand for Angolan coffee continues to grow not only in European countries such as Portugal, Italy, and France, but also in Middle Eastern countries.

The institute stated that it hopes to double Angola's coffee production within the next two to three years, as the country currently produces 15,000 tons of coffee annually.

Nelson Cosme, Angola's ambassador to Brazil, said in Medellín, Colombia on Wednesday that Angola expects to produce 50,000 tons of coffee by 2022, five times higher than the 8,000 tons produced during the period from September 2016 to June 2017.

Speaking on behalf of Angola's Minister of Agriculture Marcos Nhunga, Cosme led the Angolan delegation participating in the World Coffee Producing Countries Forum held in Colombia's second-largest city from July 10-12.

The ambassador emphasized the Angolan government's efforts to make the country a major coffee-producing nation, highlighting support provided by the Common Fund for Commodities of the International Coffee Organization, which provided $8 million for a project to renovate and plant robusta coffee in several regions of Angola.

Before independence in 1975, Angola's annual coffee bean production reached 230,000 tons, making it the world's fourth-largest coffee-producing country.

According to International Coffee Organization statistics, the post-independence civil war ended in 2002, when coffee production was nearly zero. Angola's coffee bean production was 2,400 tons in the 2016/2017 season.
