Angola's Rich Coffee Heritage

Angola has over 100 years of coffee cultivation history and ranks as the world's fourth-largest coffee industrial nation. Its production consistently held the top position in Africa until 1960. During the mid-1970s, 98% of Angola's annual coffee exports were Robusta coffee, representing the highest quality Robusta coffee in Africa. In 1974, Angola's coffee bean production reached a historic peak of 225,000 tons, ranking second in Africa and fourth globally.

Geographical Distribution of Coffee Cultivation

The northern coastal lowlands of Angola are extensive, spanning approximately 100-200 kilometers. Due to the low and flat terrain with relatively low rainfall, the vegetation exhibits semi-arid characteristics, making this region an important coffee production area. Coffee is cultivated at elevations between 400-1,500 meters with approximately 1,250 millimeters of rainfall. The northern region serves as Angola's primary coffee production zone, while later introduced Arabica varieties are planted in the central highlands.

Challenges and Revival Efforts

Angola was once one of the world's largest coffee-producing countries, with most coffee exports going to nations such as the United States, Netherlands, and Portugal. However, a subsequent 27-year civil war caused a significant decline in Angola's coffee production. To restore its former glory as a major coffee-producing nation, the Angolan government is increasing investment and implementing preferential policies to encourage companies and farmers to cultivate coffee, thereby increasing production and profitability. In 2008, a micro-loan program was implemented, offering each farming household $5,000 in government incentives to grow coffee. The government has strengthened coffee production initiatives, calling upon farm owners and entrepreneurs in production areas to actively invest human, material, and financial resources in coffee cultivation, encouraging local farmers to increase coffee production, improve rural incomes, and promote economic development in both rural and urban areas.

Recent Production Growth and Future Prospects

In 2009, Angola's coffee production doubled compared to 2008, reaching 12,000 tons. By 2012, total coffee production reached 13,900 tons. Angola's agricultural revival plan, initiated in March 2013, involves planting 1.5 million coffee seedlings on 500 hectares of arable land in Amboim province, with an expected additional production increase of 5,000 tons by 2015.

With a nationwide coffee cultivation movement gaining momentum, Angola is poised to reclaim its position as a major global coffee producer. This development will contribute to the diversification of national economic development and improve the situation of over-reliance on the oil and diamond industries.
