Akha Ama Coffee Farm
Akha Ama Coffee Farm is operated by a group of Akha people living in Maejantai village in the mountainous region of northern Thailand. Due to the local climate being highly suitable for growing Arabica coffee beans, the Thai government guided the Akha people to engage in coffee bean cultivation in the 1990s. However, they have long suffered from unfair trade practices by middlemen.
In 2010, Lee Ayu (Ayu Chuepa)'s family established Akha Ama Farm, embarking on fair trade coffee operations, handling everything from coffee cultivation to sales to ensure reasonable returns. Lee's efforts gradually drove the development of Maejantai village, and now 14 Akha families jointly participate in the operation of Akha Ama Farm.
Akha Ama Farm operates with a model of "environmental and business sustainability," which is closely related to the ethnic character of the Akha people. The Akha's living tradition is self-sufficient, always personally planting and collecting various food and supplies needed for daily life, living in cooperation with nature rather than confronting and conquering it. This traditional ethnic cultural perspective coincides with today's sustainable agriculture trends. Akha Ama Farm practices mixed cultivation of diverse crops, reducing the use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. Coffee crops that grow as tall as people are planted between taller fruit trees and diverse vegetable varieties, which benefits soil ecology, generates humus, prevents hillside erosion, and helps retain moisture during dry seasons. Through regular crop rotation, the negative impact of pests on crops has also decreased.
In 2010 and 2011, Akha Ama Farm's coffee stood out in the World Cup Tasters Championship organized by the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe, and was certified as excellent coffee recognized by consumers for its unique quality and taste, achieving the highest standards in green coffee cultivation, roasting, storage, and brewing.
Doi Chaang Coffee Farm
Doi Chaang village is situated in the mountainous region of northern Thailand (near the borders of Laos and Myanmar). From 1960-1990, with assistance from the Thai government, winter crops including Arabica coffee beans were provided, encouraging residents to shift from opium cultivation to coffee cultivation. Like the Akha people, non-Thai ethnic minorities in mountainous areas did not speak Thai, and the coffee market was still underdeveloped at that time. They could only rely on middlemen to help with sales, yet were exploited of their profits.
In 2003, Panachai Pisailert's family from Doi Chaang village, along with Wicha Phromyong, jointly established Doi Chaang Coffee Original Co., Ltd. with Pitsanuchai Kaewpichai, striving for the sustainable development of coffee cultivation. The mountain village tribes cooperating with Doi Chaang Coffee Original Co., Ltd. also include the Akha, Lisu, and Chinese peoples. After 15 years of joint efforts, they now cover 11,000 acres of coffee cultivation land, with coffee beans sold in many retail stores across Thailand, Canada, and Southeast Asia, as well as numerous coffee shop branches.
Doi Chaang Coffee Farm has obtained USDA organic certification, providing consumers with environmentally friendly and personally ethical products. When they first invested in Arabica coffee cultivation, the vast forests were damaged due to excessive irrigation, as these crops require large amounts of good, stable water sources. However, the high quality of Arabica also greatly depends on shade and ecologically diverse environments.
To this end, Doi Chaang's farmers have worked hard to cooperate in establishing and maintaining forests, planting multi-layered shade trees. Today, for Doi Chaang's farmers, "coffee cultivation is equivalent to afforestation" has become a consensus. They carefully care for every step from earth to cup, ensuring the highest quality coffee overall.
The main goal of Doi Chaang Coffee is to help Doi Chaang's coffee farmers obtain better prices when selling their crops, and to develop and maintain the quality of Doi Chaang Coffee. To this end, in 2006 they cooperated with Canadian John M. Darch, where Canadian partners purchase coffee beans produced in Thailand, with the Canadian side handling roasting, market distribution, etc. (currently main markets are South America and the UK), and承诺 that coffee producers can obtain 50% of sales profits, dedicated to fair trade.
Today, Baan Doi Chang has become one of the world's major regions for cultivating high-quality Arabica coffee. In August 2015, the European Union (EU) granted geographical indication certification to Doi Chaang Coffee's registration.
From Earth to Cup
Thai coffee bean processing, from cultivation to selective picking to wet fermentation, all undergo special preparation. After years of certification, it has been hailed as world-class specialty coffee. Unique aroma, balanced acidity, low caffeine content, and perfect growing conditions are just some of the factors that make Thai coffee beans among the world's best Arabica coffees.
