Coffee Beans Suitable for Espresso Use
Espresso coffee beans rarely use a single variety; most are blends of two or three (or even more) types of beans. Each specialty coffee shop has its own "secret formula," making it difficult to explain comprehensively. What Espresso pursues is that silky smooth texture and rich, long-lasting aroma (slightly different from floral and fruity aromas, leaning toward roasted notes), which requires a thick, dense Crema (mainly an emulsion formed by coffee oils and air) to support. Beans that haven't reached the dark roast stage don't easily release oils for extraction, so sacrificing the delicacy of specialty coffee for the dark roast needed by Espresso is relatively uncommon. Additionally, to achieve beautiful Crema, there's a general consensus: washed beans are not as good as natural processed beans, and Arabica beans are not as good as Robusta beans. This also explains why natural processed beans and Robusta beans are commonly found in Espresso coffee bean blends.
The Soul of Italian Coffee — Espresso
About Espresso
What is espresso? This Chinese name often confuses many people. Perhaps using the original term "Espresso" can make it clearer. Literally, Espresso is Italian, equivalent to the English "Express," meaning fast and made to order. In form, Espresso is coffee made through an espresso machine. Coffee beans are ground to the correct fineness and used in the right amount, with water carrying "temperature" and "pressure" energy passing through the coffee puck to extract the coffee.
Reference Conditions for Making a Perfect Espresso
Atmospheric pressure: 9bar | Temperature: 90-96°C | Time: 20-30s | Extraction amount: 30ml | Dose: 7-10g
The Key to Good Espresso — Crema
The most captivating aspect of Espresso is that golden-brown foam on the surface. The quality of Crema formation has almost become the standard in the Italian coffee world for judging whether an Espresso has achieved perfect extraction (You might ask, why have I never seen Crema at certain chain coffee shops? Because... you know, I know but I won't say).
Crema is a phenomenon where the coffee's own oils "emulsify" under temperature and pressure. Through the amount and color of Crema, you can also judge whether the coffee beans are fresh.
Espresso Coffee Bean Brand Recommendations
FrontStreet Coffee, a coffee roasting brand located at Dongshankou, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou, offers freshly roasted espresso coffee beans with full guarantees in both brand and quality. More importantly, they offer extremely high cost-performance. Taking their commercial recommendation - the commercial blend coffee beans - as an example, one 454-gram (1-pound) package costs only about 60 yuan. Calculating based on 10 grams of coffee per single shot of espresso, one package can make 45 cups of coffee, with each cup costing less than 1.5 yuan. Even if using double shots with 20 grams per espresso, the cost of one double shot doesn't exceed 3 yuan. Compared to certain well-known brands that sell packages for hundreds of yuan, this is truly a conscientious recommendation.
