Indonesia: A Remarkable Coffee-Producing Nation

Among coffee-producing countries, Indonesia is one that deserves significant attention. Indonesia is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, with its islands distributed on both sides of the equator. Three of these islands—Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi—produce globally important coffee. In the mid-17th century, the Dutch brought coffee trees to what was then Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Indonesia's Java. By the 18th century, Indonesia had become a major coffee producer, with its high-quality Arabica coffee almost entirely supplied to Europe. However, by the 19th century, the coffee rust disease that first appeared in Ceylon in 1869 also spread to Indonesia. By 1877, most coffee plantations on the Indonesian islands had been destroyed by rust disease, forcing the Dutch to introduce other coffee varieties from Africa—namely, Robusta coffee. It is more resistant to pests and diseases but somewhat inferior in quality. Approximately 90% of Indonesian coffee is Robusta beans, about 6.8 million bags annually, with less than 10% being Arabica coffee.

The Evolution of Java Coffee

Java coffee, produced on Indonesia's Java island, originally belonged to the Arabica coffee species. Pests and diseases caused Java, once prolific in high-quality Arabica coffee production, to switch to Robusta cultivation due to fear of pest infestations. The precious Arabica Java coffee thus disappeared from people's sight, and the immense preference and pursuit for Java coffee that people once had were completely lost.

Grading and Processing

Indonesian coffee grading is based on defect ratios, divided into 6 levels, G1 to G6, with G1 being the highest grade. Java coffee beans are wet-processed.

Flavor Profile

Java's Arabica coffee possesses a wonderful fruit flavor, with blackberry and grapefruit notes that make it a favorite among many coffee connoisseurs. This coffee features excellent medium purity with a crisp and refreshing taste. Its flavor is fresh and most suitable for making iced coffee in summer. When tasting this coffee, pairing it with acidic fruits like pomelo will surely provide you with the best coffee experience.

The bitterness and richness of Java coffee beans, combined with the sweet richness of chocolate syrup, make Java coffee more mellow and smooth, making it very popular among women!

Java coffee is exclusively wet-processed. Java coffee is a special coffee that possesses the characteristics of Asian coffee's thickness and intensity, yet lacks the earthy and damp moldy aromas commonly found in Sumatra, Sulawesi, or Bali coffees. Its acidity is delicate and carries natural herbal and spicy aromas, with a hint of sorghum fragrance, grain and syrup-like sweetness, and faint tobacco notes. Sometimes, subtle herbal notes also linger in the aftertaste.

Aged Java Coffee

Java also produces a small quantity of aged coffee beans... First, green beans are exposed to warm, humid air during the rainy season, then stored for 2-3 years to age. The color of the green beans changes from green to light brown, and the flavor gains intensity and viscosity while losing acidity. These aged old coffees are called Old Government, Old Brown, or Old Java...

The Perfect Mocha Java Blend

The world's only universally recognized perfect blend is the "Mocha Java Blend" composed of Java coffee blended with the finest Yemen Mocha (Mattari). With its unique flavor harmony, Yemen Mocha coffee is praised as the most complete and perfectly matched combination—wine-like aroma, brewing-like richness, delicate fruit acidity, fructose-like fruit fragrance, and pure, thick throat-coating sensation. It is an unforgettable memory for all who have tried it.
