Colombia: The World's Third-Largest Coffee Producer
Colombia is currently the world's third-largest coffee-producing country, surpassed only by Brazil and Vietnam. Its mountainous terrain combined with diverse tropical microclimates provides ideal growing conditions. There are 14 main coffee-producing regions, including Narino, Cauca, Meta, Huila, Tolima, Quindio, Caldas, Risaralda, Antioquia, Valle, Cundinamarca, Boyaca, Santander, and Norte de Santander.
The Narino coffee-growing region, located in the western corner of Colombia, is the country's highest-altitude area. Coffee grows on the high mountain slopes facing the western coast. This region is a primary supplier for Starbucks, and only premium smallholder top-quality coffee beans have the opportunity to be exported.
Narino: Premium Coffee Selection
The selected coffee beans from Colombia's Narino province have smaller green bean particles. Due to cultivation in the high-altitude southern provinces, the coffee harvest period is approximately around the middle of each year. In fact, there are many high-quality beans from this province. As traders from various countries gradually station purchasing representatives in Colombia, a healthy competitive situation has emerged!
Narino province produces approximately 150,000 bags annually, with only about 6,000 bags classified as selected beans. Outstanding specialty Narino coffee farmers cultivate at altitudes exceeding 2,000 meters, producing Colombia's highest-quality Narino coffee.
Micro-Batch Colombia Smallholder Program
In 2015, the micro-batch Colombia smallholder program was launched. This program provides coffee from several of Colombia's most outstanding producing regions, including Huila, Narino, Cauca, Tolima, and others.
Unlike many coffee farmers who grow the Castillo variety, the smallholder coffee program exclusively chooses to cultivate traditional varieties such as Bourbon, Typica, Caturra, and Catuai. Because these smallholders have an average cultivation area of only a few hectares, the annual quantity available for each batch is only about 3,000 to 4,000 kilograms. The average altitude of these smallholders ranges from 1,500 to 1,800 meters.
Narino Coffee Region: Geography and Climate
Colombia's Narino region is located in the southeastern part of Colombia, at the intersection with Ecuador in the Andes Mountains (the Andes Mountains begin in Chile and Argentina to the south, span across Colombia from north to south, and simultaneously traverse the Narino region).
The natural geographical environment here—the tropical Pacific coast, Amazon basin, and towering Andes Mountains—divides the Narino region into three main landforms: first, the plains along the Pacific coast; second, the Amazon basin; and third, the Andean mountainous region.
The Narino coffee region is produced by 37 municipalities within Narino province. Located near latitude 0° at the equator, the daily sunlight hours received throughout the year are nearly identical, with an average of 1,666 hours of sunshine annually.
Simultaneously, the region's location and geographical environment, with an average annual temperature suitable for coffee growth, stable temperature variations between morning and evening, and annual rainfall, allow coffee trees with rich organic soil to thrive in high-altitude areas of the Narino coffee region, significantly impacting the coffee's flavor and aroma.
