Nariño Coffee Beans: A Premium Colombian Variety
Colombian Nariño coffee beans are produced in the Nariño province in southwestern Colombia, located in one of the many coffee-producing regions of the Andes mountains near the Ecuador border. This is a premium coffee bean highly regarded by coffee enthusiasts.
Through careful manual selection of the highest quality beans, only coffee beans that reach or exceed an 18 screen size are chosen. The supremo grade beans, known for their large and beautiful appearance, are marked with "Narino Reserva Del Patron" before being shipped.
Nariño coffee beans are recommended for light roasting (High Roast). When brewed using siphon or pour-over methods, they reveal rich aromas, charming fruit notes, and delicate acidity with rich layers. The coffee carries a dark chocolate fragrance, leaves a lingering aftertaste, and features fresh, gentle acidity that remains exceptionally smooth even as it cools.
Colombia: A Global Coffee Powerhouse
Colombia is currently the world's third-largest coffee-producing country, surpassed only by Brazil and Vietnam. Commercial coffee cultivation began as early as the 1830s. By the 20th century, coffee had become the largest export agricultural commodity. The mountainous terrain combined with diverse tropical microclimates provides ideal growing conditions. 75% of the total production is exported abroad, making it the most important source of foreign exchange income.
Traditionally, mature coffee cherries are processed using the washed method. Over the past 15 years, Colombia's Coffee Research Center has developed an eco-friendly system that requires minimal water usage, reducing water pollution by 90% and water consumption by 95%. This processing method not only effectively preserves the ecosystem but also improves quality. Small farms typically spread their parchment coffee beans on the flat roofs of their homes for sun-drying.
Colombia's favorable climate and significant temperature variations allow for year-round production in most regions. The main harvest season runs from October to February of the following year, with November and December being the peak harvest period. Major varieties include Caturra, Colombia, Tipica, Bourbon, Maragogype, and Tabi. Across the country, more than 500,000 farmers operate farms and cooperatives of all sizes, distributed across 590 municipalities and 14 major coffee-producing regions—including Nariño, Cauca, Meta, Huila, Tolima, Quindio, Caldas, Risaralda, Antioquia, Valle, Cundinamarca, Boyacá, Santander, and Norte de Santander. In total, 2 million Colombians depend on coffee cultivation for their livelihood, contributing 12.5% to the country's agricultural GDP.
The Nariño Coffee Region
The Nariño coffee region, located in the southwestern corner of Colombia, is the highest-altitude area in the country. Coffee grows on high mountain slopes near the western coast. This region is a primary supplier for Starbucks Coffee, with only the highest quality beans from small farms having the opportunity to be exported. It enjoys the reputation of the "Holy Grail of Coffee." Nariño's small-farm selected beans are independently produced specifically for the European market.
