Our Partnership in Bolivia

Our partner in Bolivia is Agricafe, established by Pedro Rodriguez and his children Pedro Pablo and Daniela. Agricafe can be described as a key driving force behind the revival of Bolivia's specialty coffee industry and remains virtually the main pillar of Bolivia's specialty coffee sector today.

Several renowned roasters from Europe and America, such as Intelligentsia, Has Bean, Stumptown, Drop Coffee, 49th Parallel, Maruyama, and others, almost consistently source their beans from Agricafe.

Pedro's Coffee Estates

Pedro has established several important private estates in the Caranavi coffee region, including Finca Don Carlos and Finca Alastias. Even more excitingly, in Bolivia's eastern coffee region, around the high-altitude areas of Santa Cruz, he has also created the Finca El Fuerte estate, which has already had its first harvest this year.

After introducing Pedro's coffee last year, we were thoroughly impressed and made a special trip to bring back what we had eagerly awaited as our secret weapon. The several varieties that have now arrived are absolutely worth savoring repeatedly.

El Sol de Manana Project

In addition to his own estates, Pedro, with the dream of reviving Bolivian coffee and improving the lives of coffee farmers, initiated the El Sol de Manana (Tomorrow's Sun) project. This project invests significant effort in guiding member smallholders, providing technical support for crucial aspects such as breeding, pruning, fertilizing, and harvesting.

The project purchases cherries harvested by member smallholders at higher prices and utilizes Agricafe's own processing facilities for post-harvest processing, creating a virtuous cycle of sustainable development for both farmer income and quality.

Bolivia: Land of Diversity

Bolivia is one of the five most diverse countries in the world—a landlocked nation surrounded by five countries and deeply influenced by them, with a population of approximately 10 million. Indigenous peoples, comprising about 60% of the total population, are divided into 36 ethnic groups, while Mestizos (people of mixed European and indigenous ancestry) account for 26%, with additional European and other ethnic groups.

The terrain features the towering Illmani peak at 6,462 meters, Lake Titicaca—the world's highest navigable alpine lake at 3,812 meters above sea level—and tropical rainforests! Such diverse topography can be described as a paradise for specialty coffee micro-lots.

Challenges Facing Bolivian Coffee

However, Bolivia's coffee production has been declining year after year. From 1997 to 2014, export volumes annually decreased to only one-quarter of their previous levels. According to data from Roast Magazine, Bolivia ranks 38th in coffee production, even behind the United States, which ranks 35th. Specialty micro-lot Bolivian coffee has become extremely precious and rare to find.

The reasons include Bolivia's lagging economic development and infrastructure—Bolivia currently remains the poorest country in South America. Furthermore, while Bolivia originally possessed uniquely diverse terrain, poor infrastructure has become a critical factor that hampers coffee processing, transportation, and quality.
