The New Generation Coffee Farmer Cesar Mauricio Herrera

Antioquia has traditionally been a typical commercial coffee growing region, with large coffee plantations, and this remains largely the case today.

However, as the younger generation of coffee farmers began to take over coffee production, things have finally started to change. Cesar Mauricio Herrera is one of them. He collaborates with Norwegian green coffee buyer Nordic Approach, along with a group of young coffee farmers, forming their own group led by Juan Saldarriaga. The team named themselves "New Generation," emphasizing new approaches to coffee cultivation.

Coffee cherries are all hand-picked. After 36 hours of dry fermentation, they are first washed, then defect beans are sorted through running water, and the coffee is cleaned with fresh water before being sent to the drying fields. They are shade-dried for 14-20 days.

For Nordic Approach, Antioquia is a new region full of fresh opportunities. They found that the coffee flavors here are quite distinctive and have great potential. The excellent performance in COE competitions over the past few years has proven that Antioquia has become one of Colombia's top producing regions.

Antioquia

Antioquia Province is famous for producing beautiful women and abundant products, making it the wealthiest region in Colombia. Located in the central-western part, the province has a small section bordering the Caribbean Sea to the north and also borders Bolivia. The central and western sections of the Andes mountain range Cordilleras traverse Antioquia Province, providing fertile soil and high altitude—ideal conditions for coffee growth. In addition to the two main local crops of bananas and coffee, it also produces abundant rice and orchids. The Spanish entered this indigenous-inhabited region in the 16th century and named it Antioquia.

Antioquia was originally obscure on the specialty coffee map, never appearing in Colombia's Cup of Excellence rankings. However, in 2014, it remarkably took three of the top five positions, securing 1st, 3rd, and 5th places, which surprised everyone. The championship was won by "Bella Vista" farm, and that coffee was one of the best coffees available at "The Roaster." Since then, Antioquia has stood on equal footing with famous producing regions like Cauca, Huila, Tolima, and Nariño.
