About Mama Cata Estate

Mama Cata Estate, located in the Alto Quiel region of Boquete, Panama, is operated by the Garrido family. Alto Quiel should be quite familiar to many, as numerous top-tier Panamanian coffees originate from this area.

The Garrido family also operates a processing station outside Boquete town, where coffee cherries undergo everything from pulping to storage. Estate owner Jose David Garrido has implemented multiple improvement measures, enhancing the farm's processing techniques and quality control, including classifying washed processed beans by batch and conducting cupping sessions.

In 1997, Jose David Garrido took over the management of Mama Cata Estate. The estate's geographical location is exceptionally advantageous, situated at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 1,700 meters, with annual average temperatures between 12 to 26 degrees Celsius. The volcanic soil is extremely fertile, with average rainfall of approximately 175 inches. This natural microclimate provides coffee trees growing here with sufficient nutrients to absorb.

Technology-Driven Excellence

Unlike traditional estates, Mama Cata Estate utilizes GPS observation systems. Through technological data and derived conclusions, the Garrido family can understand the species, soil composition, health status, and production conditions of each coffee tree, further effectively utilizing these variables to control quality. Using this GPS data, they can also observe which batches are ready for harvesting. During the coffee cherry harvesting process, the most critical aspect is identifying and picking the ripest coffee cherries - with this technological assistance, it becomes much easier! Even natural drying is monitored by high-tech weather stations. The high-quality coffee produced under such care rightfully deserves to win championships in Panamanian competitions!

Afterward, the beans undergo hulling, classification, and cupping processes for grading before being arranged for shipment. Each batch of beans is not mixed but individually packaged for shipment, ensuring Mama Cata Estate's excellent quality.

Rich Heritage and Achievements

There's actually a story behind Mama Cata Estate. Before Panama became a nation, Mr. Monic owned what is now Mama Cata Estate, when the estate even had its own currency called Texas. Later, it came under the ownership of Mr. Fisher, who, after his wife's passing, married his housekeeper Catalina. The Fisher family early on introduced Geisha, but only cultivated it in small batches, focusing primarily on the traditional Typica variety.

Over several years, Mama Cata Estate's washed processed Typica won the championship three times in the Panamanian Coffee Competition. Today, their strength is even more formidable, achieving 16th place in the Natural Geisha category, 4th place in the Washed Geisha category, 5th place in the Innovation category, and 4th place in the Traditional Washed category in 2016.
