Cameroon Coffee: The Specialty Market's Unique Character

Cameroon coffee is quite the "oddity" in the specialty coffee market. First, it hails from West Africa, unlike other East African countries familiar to Chinese consumers such as Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Rwanda. Traditionally, Cameroonian coffee has been predominantly of the Robusta variety, with coffee cultivation occurring in all provinces except the northern ones. In response to foreign market demands, Arabica coffee cultivation began, though this doesn't mean all Robusta is inferior quality. Arabica beans are mainly distributed in the high-altitude regions of the west, northwest, and east. The western highland growing regions average around 5,000 feet elevation, with distinct rainy and dry seasons, plus fertile black volcanic soil and organic environments formed by natural barriers - ideal conditions for producing high-quality Arabica beans.

This South African coffee bean comes from the Boyo Cooperative, where coffee is intercropped with other crops to avoid disease risks without needing herbicides and pesticides. The coffee flowering period coincides with the beginning of the rainy season, and as coffee berries begin to mature, abundant sunshine during the dry season stimulates coffee cherries to quickly reach optimal sugar content. Farmers hand-pick fully ripe coffee cherries and process them using the washed method, continuing the tradition since coffee was first introduced to Cameroon's Boyo Cooperative PB peaberries.
