Characteristics of Nicaraguan Coffee Beans
Compared to Guatemalan coffee, Nicaraguan coffee can be considered relatively unknown. Compared to Guatemala's high mountain beans, Nicaraguan beans are more balanced but lack some distinctive characteristics. They are medium-sized in grain, mild in flavor, and extremely aromatic and rich. Nicaragua is located in central Central America, and the best Nicaraguan coffee is produced in Matagalpa's Sinotega and Nueva Segovia regions.
Nicaraguan Growing Regions
Nicaragua is mainly divided into four major growing regions: Segovias, Matagalpa/Jinotega, Boaco, and Pacific Coast. The Segovias region has the highest cultivation altitude at around 1,500-2,000 meters, producing the highest grade SHG (Strictly High Grown) coffee.
Nicaraguan Coffee Bean Cultivation
Widespread volcanic ash and shade-grown cultivation methods produce high-quality Nicaraguan coffee with a mild, smooth flavor and slight acidity. Nicaraguan coffee beans are among the larger varieties of all coffee beans. MADRIZ is located in the mountainous northern region of Nicaragua, bordering Nueva Segovia, Jinotega, and Esteli. This area is peaceful and elegant, featuring the famous Somoto Canyon. The local population consists mainly of various tribal indigenous peoples and people of mixed Spanish and indigenous heritage from the colonial period (mostly Chorotegas). The region produces coffee, develops artistic and handicraft processing trade, and offers traditional delicious cuisine. Madriz is characterized by a cool climate, with seemingly simple small towns featuring beautiful house roofs and distinctive white buildings with special tiles. The area also has many coffee plantations, with mountains covered in lush pine and oak forests.
Madriz mountain beans are ecological coffee with extremely hard shells, cultivated in purely natural growing environments using more complex methods to maintain the coffee's delicate aroma and flavor. They are produced from the high mountain region between Matagalpa and Jinotega in northern Nicaragua, with an average annual rainfall of 1500-1700mm and temperatures between 20-29 degrees Celsius. All coffee beans are hand-selected, with labor and time costs far exceeding those of ordinary beans.
