Sonora Estate
Sonora Estate is located in the Central Valley region of Costa Rica, at the foot of Poas Volcano. The estate grows seven different coffee varieties: Bourbon, Red Catuai, Yellow Catuai, Venecia, Villa Sarchi, Villalobos, and Geisha, producing only honey-processed and natural-processed coffee. The estate covers approximately 100 hectares, with 45 hectares dedicated to coffee cultivation, abundant native forest providing excellent shade for coffee trees, 35 hectares as wild forest reserve, and the remaining land primarily used for sugarcane cultivation. The superior environment and nutrient-rich volcanic soil enable the farm to maintain a diverse ecosystem, where many different birds and wildlife inhabit the estate.
The estate's processing facilities are located in the sugar mill at the center of the farm. By exclusively using honey processing and natural processing, both methods require more manual labor and post-processing time compared to traditional washed processing. However, producing one pound of green coffee beans can save 3 gallons of clean water, reflecting Sonora Estate's commitment to quality over quantity. All energy and electricity on the farm comes from their own hydroelectric power facility, providing 100% renewable energy that powers processing equipment and supplies workers living on the farm.
