Hawaii: The Only Coffee-Growing Region in the United States

Coffee plants were first introduced to Hawaii in 1817 by Don Francisco de Paula Marin, the first Spanish advisor during King Kamehameha's reign. The initial planting was unsuccessful. In 1825, Oahu's Governor Chief Boki successfully cultivated coffee from Brazil in the Manoa Valley. Since then, coffee cultivation began throughout the islands. Currently, approximately 950 farms grow coffee across Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, and the Big Island, with most being small family-run operations covering a total area of 7,900 acres.

Kona Region

When it comes to Hawaiian coffee, Kona coffee beans are what typically come to mind. In 1828, missionary Samuel Ruggles first planted coffee in the Kona district of the Big Island. Today, Kona coffee production accounts for about half of Hawaii's total coffee output, with approximately 600 independent farms situated in the northern and southern regions of Kona. Kona coffee is primarily grown on the western slopes of Mauna Loa and Hualalai volcanoes at low to medium altitudes of around 2,000-3,000 feet. The volcanic region is renowned for its black soil, which has moderate pH levels, is rich in minerals, and helps maintain soil moisture content. In recent years, Hawaiian Ka'u coffee has gained increasing attention in the United States. It is grown on the eastern slopes of Mauna Loa at altitudes of approximately 2,000-3,000 feet. Award-winning estates are mostly located in the town of Pahala, at the northernmost tip of the Ka'u region on the Big Island. The Ka'u region features diverse topography, with coffee planted on sunny slopes. The combination of ample morning sunshine and afternoon cloudy conditions, plus the world's largest Mauna Loa volcano's mineral-rich black soil with moderate pH and porous texture that helps maintain appropriate soil moisture, creates optimal growing conditions for coffee trees.

The Ka'u region originally focused on sugarcane cultivation, with small-scale coffee planting beginning in 1894. However, when sugar prices plummeted in 1996, the Ka'u region actively transitioned from sugar to coffee production. Through farmers' efforts, leveraging excellent soil conditions and meticulous cultivation techniques, Ka'u coffee rapidly caught up and began participating in regional and national cupping competitions, consistently receiving high praise. In the 2011 SCAA cupping competition, Ka'u coffee not only won first prize in the Hawaii region but also earned the distinction of world-class premium coffee. Experts praise Ka'u coffee for its rich, full-bodied flavor and unique aroma. Described as like strolling through a garden, it offers a silky smooth mouthfeel. World-renowned coffee brands have rushed to purchase it, establishing Ka'u as the rising star of Hawaiian specialty coffee.

Flavored Coffee
