Introduction to Burundi Coffee

In 1920, Belgian colonizers brought coffee to Burundi for cultivation. Due to the coercive policies of the Belgian colonizers, by 1933, each farming household was required to plant a minimum of 50 coffee trees.

Burundi is a landlocked country located in East Africa, bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west.

In terms of climate, Burundi is regulated by highlands, resulting in a tropical savanna climate with annual rainfall of approximately 1,200-1,600mm.

Because it is situated in the western branch of the East African Rift Valley, most of the country consists of plateaus at elevations above 1,500 meters, with heights decreasing from west to east.

Between Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo lies a freshwater lake called Lake Tanganyika. According to geological research, Lake Tanganyika is the world's second-deepest and second-oldest lake.

This lake is extremely rich in biological species, with fish species living here accounting for 80% of the world's total.

To the east of Lake Tanganyika, there is a suddenly rising mountain ridge that also serves as the watershed between the Nile and Congo river systems, earning it the beautiful name "Heart of Africa."

Burundi's Coffee Industry

The highland climate makes Burundi very suitable for coffee cultivation. The country's economy is primarily agricultural, with coffee exports accounting for 80% of foreign exchange earnings. 40% of the national population, or 600,000 households, are engaged in coffee production.

In the 1930s, when it was still a Belgian colony, Burundi began growing coffee. From the 1980s to 1993, the World Bank significantly assisted in investing in Burundi's coffee industry, establishing washing stations and coffee plantations throughout the country.

The number of coffee trees increased from 90 million to over 200 million, and 133 washing stations were built, with 160 currently in operation.

However, for a long time, coffee quality was not very good, belonging to general commercial beans, and was greatly influenced by the international futures market.

In recent years, green coffee merchants from America and Northern Europe have deeply penetrated Burundi, assisting local coffee farmers in improving coffee quality. The potential of Burundi coffee beans cannot be ignored!

Burundi Coffee Characteristics

Burundi is a small country located in the heart of Africa, situated below Rwanda, between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania.

Burundi coffee beans are sweet, complex, rich, and have excellent mouthfeel. Like their world-renowned coffee-producing neighbors Ethiopia and Kenya, in typical Burundi coffee, it's not uncommon to taste various fruit flavors amidst thick and sweet chocolate notes. The acidity is extremely bright and clean, creating bright and balanced characteristics in the cup.

Brewing Guide for Burundi Coffee

Using a V60 dripper, use 15g of coffee grounds with 30g of water for a 35-second bloom. Extract with water at 89-90°C temperature at a 1:15 ratio, using medium-fine grind (Fuji R4). For the second pour, add water to 140ml and pause, wait for the water level to drop before slowly adding more water. Maintain even speed and avoid too high water levels. Add water to 225ml for the final pour and stop. Extraction time should be 2:15 seconds.

During brewing, the enticing citrus aroma quickly emerges, and upon tasting, you'll experience citrus and black tea notes.
