The Rising Star of Central American Coffee: Honduras Coffee Beans

Among the mild-mannered Central American coffees, Honduras coffee beans stand out with their distinctive style and rich character. Although the coffee industry developed relatively late, it has gained remarkable momentum. With high production volume, sweet flavor, fruity aroma, and low acidity characteristics, it has cultivated a loyal following.

Norwegian coffee master Tim Wendelboe is one such devoted supporter of Honduras coffee beans. What kind of coffee has so rapidly penetrated the highly competitive specialty market? What distinctive features have allowed it to quickly find its international positioning? Today, let's discuss the charismatic rising star—Honduran coffee beans.

Brief History of Honduran Coffee

Honduras's coffee industry developed quite late, far behind most neighboring Central American countries. In 1970, the government established the official institution Instituto Hondureño del Cafe (IHCAFE), dedicated to improving coffee quality. Within the six coffee-growing regions defined by this institution, coffee laboratories were established to assist coffee producers.

After 2001, coffee production increased significantly until 2011, when production reached nearly 6 million bags, exceeding the combined total of Costa Rica and Guatemala. Approximately 110,000 families in the country are engaged in coffee production.

Starting in 2012, production declined sharply due to coffee leaf rust (Roya). Coffee leaf rust is a fungal coffee leaf rust pathogen (Hemileia Vastatrix) that causes leaves to be unable to perform photosynthesis and eventually fall off, ultimately killing the entire tree. Due to climate change and warming, the leaf rust problem has worsened. Combined with extremely high rainfall, coffee drying, processing, and storage have become challenging—this is a major issue facing Honduras today.

Honduras Coffee Bean Characteristics

Honduras has three main producing regions, whose output exceeds half of the country's total coffee value.

Copan: Copan beans possess chocolate flavors, rich mouthfeel, and high sweetness.

Agalta: Coffee beans from this region carry tropical fruit aromas, sweeter taste, balanced acidity, and chocolate notes.

Generally, Honduran coffee is elegant and fruity, drinking like juice, sometimes with nutty and toffee aromas.
