World's Most Expensive Coffee: $400 HKD per Cup

Coffee is the go-to energy drink for many office workers, and many people love the aroma that fills the air when brewing coffee. But would you still pay for a cup of coffee that costs HK$400 (approximately RMB 500)? Hong Kong's coffee chain "The Coffee Academics" is betting that consumers will pay, using the world's most expensive coffee bean "Geisha" to create their coffee, with only 5 limited cups available daily.

The Origin of Geisha Coffee

"Geisha" coffee beans originate from Geisha Mountain in Ethiopia. Due to the similar pronunciation of "Geisha" to the Japanese word "geisha," it was named accordingly. Because of low yields affecting harvest quantities, many coffee farmers are unwilling to cultivate it. It wasn't until Daniel Peterson, the owner of Panama's Hacienda La Esmeralda, accidentally discovered that these Geisha coffee trees, originally used as windbreaks, produced coffee beans with unique citrus and floral notes characteristic of African beans. After winning the 2004 Panama Coffee "Cupping Competition," it became an overnight sensation and its value soared.

Record-Breaking Coffee Auction

The "Geisha" used by The Coffee Academics was acquired at auction in July of this year for $601 USD per pound (approximately RMB 2,000), setting a new record in coffee auction history. The Coffee Academics purchased a total of 7 kilograms from this batch of coffee beans, enough to make approximately 300 cups of coffee. With a daily production limit of 5 cups, each cup is priced at HK$400.
