Understanding Turkish Coffee

Deep-roasted coffee beans, ground into extremely fine coffee powder, can be used to make Turkish coffee. The fineness required for Turkish coffee powder is the finest among all brewing methods, requiring extremely fine grinding. The intuitive standard is that the coffee powder should be finer than flour.

Traditional Brewing Method

Then mix with spices such as cloves, cardamom, and cinnamon. Subsequently, place 100 milliliters of cold water in a Turkish coffee pot. Then add about 10 grams of coffee powder. 100 milliliters of water + 10 grams of powder is the golden ratio for one cup of coffee.

After adding the ingredients, it's time to heat and stir continuously. When stirring, it must be gentle and slow to avoid breaking up the powder layer on the liquid surface (avoid breaking the grounds), which would cause over-extraction. Just before boiling, a layer of golden foam appears on the surface, gradually increasing and rapidly rising. Immediately remove the pot from the heat, wait for the foam to fall, then return it to the heat. After several boilings, the coffee gradually thickens, but you must wait until the water reduces to half its original volume to consider it complete. Wait for the coffee grounds to settle at the bottom, then pour out the clear upper coffee liquid. Sometimes lemon or honey can be added. This way, a delicious cup of Turkish coffee is ready.

A Coffee Experience

That day when I went for coffee and saw them brewing Turkish coffee, there was a group of people gathered nearby playing the erhu (a traditional Chinese two-stringed instrument). It was truly wonderful to have the sound of erhu and the aroma of coffee.
