Introduction

No country in the world values high-quality coffee production like Kenya, making Kenya the best model among coffee-producing nations. After harvesting, all Kenyan coffee must be submitted to the government-established Coffee Board of Kenya (CBK) for unified purchasing and cupping grading.

Every Tuesday, official public auctions are held at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange in the capital. This publicly managed system encourages over 570,000 small-scale coffee farmers throughout Kenya, ensuring that good quality yields good prices. In fact, the Kenyan government provides extensive support, offering numerous small coffee farmers technical knowledge on cultivating premium coffee, guiding nearly 300 agricultural marketing cooperatives (similar to Taiwan's agricultural production and marketing classes) in better green bean processing, and investing significant effort and educational guidance in coffee industry production, quality research, sales, and even financial assistance.

This has created the unparalleled charm of Kenyan coffee quality and flavor, deeply loved by coffee buyers from around the world. Kenyan coffee is also extremely popular in the Taiwanese coffee market.

Located in East Africa, Kenya is one of the major coffee-producing countries, with approximately six million people engaged in the coffee industry, mostly in the form of small farmers and cooperatives. Kenyan coffee trees are primarily grown at altitudes between 1,400-2,000 meters, with growing regions including Ruiri, Thika, Kirinyaga, Mt. Kenya West, Nyeri, Kiambu, and Muranga, mainly on the foothills of Mt. Kenya and Aberdare.

Many coffee-growing regions in Kenya strive to preserve native forest ecosystems, protecting natural gene banks and supporting the propagation of wild coffee varieties, nurturing diverse coffee trees. In 1930, Kenya's unique varieties SL28 and SL34, cultivated and named by the "Scott Laboratories" laboratory, were born in this favorable environment. According to SL laboratory botanists, SL28 and SL34 are genetic variants. Among them, SL28 possesses mixed lineage from French missionaries, Mocha, and Yemeni Typica.

The original goal of cultivating SL28 was to mass-produce coffee beans that combined high quality with resistance to pests and diseases. Although SL28's later yield was not as high as expected, its copper-colored leaves and broad bean-shaped seeds exhibit wonderful sweetness, balance, complex and varied flavors, along with distinctive citrus and plum characteristics.

Meanwhile, SL34 has similar flavors to SL28, but in addition to complex and varied acidity and a wonderful sweet finish, its mouthfeel is heavier and more concentrated than SL28, yet cleaner. SL34 has lineage from French missionaries, Bourbon, and more Typica. Its bean appearance is similar to SL28, but it's better adapted to sudden heavy rainfall. It is these two important varieties that lead us to understand the unique Kenyan style: intense and rich fruit acidity, concentrated mouthfeel, and beautiful balance.

This batch of FrontStreet Coffee's Kenya Meru Kigari AA Grade product comes from Meru County, located on the northeastern slope of Mount Kenya. Grown at high altitudes of 1,700-1,800 meters by cooperative members, in recent years, Meru County has increasingly supported its coffee growers as community members. The result is: farmers are receiving benefits in the form of increased wages and crop evaluations compared to neighboring regions. The Meru region is now consistently producing high-quality Kenyan SL28 and SL34 Arabica coffee varieties. These varieties are heirloom ingredients particularly suited to Kenya's terroir as well as parts of Tanzania, Malawi, and Burundi.
