First, let's mention Ethiopia's four-tier administrative structure: Province - Zone - Woreda - Kebele. Ethiopia's officially designated Yirgacheffe region is distributed across two zones, comprising a total of eight townships that contribute to the region's renowned coffee production legacy. These areas are celebrated for producing distinctive coffee varieties with exceptional flavor profiles that reflect the unique terroir of each location.

Ethiopia's Administrative Structure

First, it's important to mention Ethiopia's four-tier administrative structure: Province - Zone - Woreda - Kebele. According to Ethiopian official regulations, Yirgacheffe is distributed across two zones (Zone), totaling eight woredas: Gedio Zone: Dilla, Wenago, Bule, Yirgacheffe, Kochere, Gedeb. Borena Zone: Abaya, Gelena.

Gedeb: The High-Altitude Coffee Region

The entire Gedeb woreda has an elevation of at least 1,950 meters. Coffee farms located at 2,000-2,200 meters are still considered relatively low, with many coffee trees planted on slopes at 2,200-2,400 meters. Such altitude conditions certainly dominate the entire Yirgacheffe region, making it easy for coffee professionals to find excellent batches from this area.

Gedeb coffee refers to coffee beans produced in Gedeb Woreda of the Gedio Zone.

Gedeb is a woreda, equivalent in status to Kochere, not a village within Kochere town! (Kochere town has a total of 25 kebeles, none of which are called Gedeb.) Sometimes procurement agents get confused because it is indeed the most remote: from Yirgacheffe town, it takes at least another 40 kilometers to reach Gedeb town. But that's just to reach Gedeb town - if you want to go deeper into villages like Worka Sakaro, Halo Bariti, Banko Gotiti, Banko Dahato, etc., you need to travel another dozen kilometers of muddy roads, which is quite challenging! However, purchasing coffee beans from this region is well worth it.

Gedeb LOT#3 is located in the Yirgacheffe Kochere production area, specifically in Gedeb town, 60 kilometers south of Yirgacheffe, about an hour's drive away. It belongs to the southern Gedio administrative region of Ethiopia and is a very famous specialty coffee bean production area. Local smallholder coffee farmers directly deliver harvested red cherry fruits to processing stations within the villages for sale. Gedeb town has many natural drying African beds, and due to the high altitude temperatures (15-25°C), green bean processing requires a longer drying time. The coffee red cherries come from approximately 800 local family smallholder farmers. These small farmers have an average coffee cultivation area of less than 1.5 hectares, with cultivation altitudes ranging from 1,900 to 2,000 meters. Coffee varieties are mainly mixtures of Typica and Heirloom (local native varieties). Evaluated as G1 grade by ECX, they demonstrate excellent quality from appearance, consistency, freshness to dry aroma and flavor. The aroma is exceptionally rich, displaying the distinctive characteristics of Yirgacheffe origin, emitting elegant and charming floral perfume-like fragrances, with notes of flowers, bright citrus acidity, lemon, berries, and honey's sweet and sour aroma.

Flavor Profile

Floral notes with sweet citrus, orange fruits, jasmine aroma, distinctive lemon characteristics, rich mouthfeel, rounded sweet and sour sensation, smooth and sweet.

Ethiopia: The Birthplace of Arabica Coffee

Ethiopia is the birthplace of Arabica coffee beans and the first country where coffee was discovered. Today, the Kaffa primitive forest still contains many wild coffee varieties. Ethiopia's first impression is often poverty, backwardness, and hunger, without history or culture. In fact, if not for the turmoil of war that left her heavily indebted, Ethiopia is actually a beautiful country with ancient historical civilization. It has Earth's largest East African Rift Valley terrain, the true origin of humanity, and the location of the biblical Garden of Eden. This area gathers East Africa's richest wildlife and birds, especially in the largest Awash National Park. Ethiopia is one of the few African countries with ancient traditional history. Every city in Ethiopia has its own story and personality.

The capital, Addis Ababa, situated at an altitude of over 2,400 meters, means "fresh flower."

Gedeb: Ethiopia's Premium Coffee Region

Gedeb town in the southern Gedio administrative region of Ethiopia is a famous specialty coffee bean production area. Local smallholder coffee farmers directly deliver harvested red cherry fruits to this processing station for sale. These small farmers have an average cultivation area of less than 2 hectares, with cultivation altitudes ranging from 1,900 to 2,100 meters. Coffee varieties are mainly local unique Heirloom varieties.

Kokanna Processing Station is located 60 kilometers south of Yirgacheffe, about an hour's drive away, belonging to Gedeb town in the southern Gedio administrative region of Ethiopia, a famous specialty coffee bean production area. "Kokanna" means "pear" in the local language. Kokanna Processing Station has 80 natural drying African beds, and due to the high altitude temperatures (15-25°C), washed processing requires a longer drying time.

In the official Yirgacheffe production area, there is a gradually emerging small production area called Gedeb (also translated as Jiedipu).

Gedeb is a woreda, equivalent in status to Yirgacheffe town, both belonging to the administrative divisions under Ethiopia's Gedio Zone (if classified by ECX production area, it belongs to Kochere).

This production area is not far from Worka, which has unique blueberry tones, and can be considered the most excellent belt in the broader Yirgacheffe region.

The average altitude is extremely high, making it the highest production area among Yirgacheffe flavor profiles!

The altitude easily reaches 1,900-2,200 meters (prone to altitude sickness), much higher than general official Yirgacheffe production areas. The advantages of high altitude make Gedeb a uniquely blessed region for coffee cultivation! More and more coffee hunters are exploring this area, making it a gradually shining micro-production area!
