Peaberry Coffee Beans from Bali: A Rare and Precious Gift

Recently, I received this small gift: peaberry coffee beans from Bali. What? Peaberry? Do coffee beans have male and female? Actually, not exactly. The terms "male" and "female" coffee beans are just common names; more accurately, they should be called "peaberries" and "flat beans." The peaberry has an oval shape with finer crevices in the middle after roasting, while the female bean (flat bean) appears slightly flatter with more obvious crevices after roasting. According to the local factory, only about 1 kilogram of peaberries can be selected from every 300 kilograms of coffee beans, making them even rarer and more precious.

Bali's Golden Rabbit Coffee Beans (Peaberries)

I have visited the Golden Coffee Factory in Bali, where the owner enthusiastically takes you to tour the coffee bean production process, telling you what green beans are, what roasting methods exist, how to grind, how to brew coffee... and finally uses an American-style coffee machine to make a large pot of coffee for all visitors to taste. Perhaps because they used an American-style coffee machine, it seemed impossible to properly taste the flavor differences between peaberries and flat beans on site, so at that time I only bought regular golden coffee beans and didn't purchase the peaberries. But this time someone gave me these beans to taste, so of course I couldn't miss this great opportunity, so I...

The Coffee Tasting Process

1. Check if the packaging bag is intact, whether it has CO2 vent holes, and if there's any damage

2. Examine the oil condition on the surface of the coffee beans

3. Put the coffee beans into a grinder for different fineness levels of grinding

4. Use an espresso machine to make several espressos to taste the flavor

Comparing Peaberries and Flat Beans

Comparison image: flat bean (left) with peaberries (right two beans)

In the picture, the first bean on the left is a regular flat bean (female bean), and the two beans on the right are peaberries (male beans). So can everyone see the difference between peaberries and female beans?

The espresso brewed using Bali's peaberries shows a pretty good deep brown crema on the surface.

This is freshly brewed espresso. I tried several grind settings and finally adopted a double espresso extracted for about 30 seconds. I didn't brew too much, mainly wanting to taste the most original texture of the beans. After tasting, I felt that perhaps because the beans traveled across the ocean to Taiwan and were also lightly to moderately roasted, the amount of crema wasn't abundant, but the texture was quite good, presenting the mild taste that the local factory guide described - not bitter, not sour, very gentle. As for the difference from female beans (flat beans), I can only say it's better described as more "refined," but peaberries are much more expensive than female beans. Whether it's worth buying them for luxurious drinking depends on your personal requirements.
