Peru Coffee Growing Regions

Peru's coffee production is predominantly composed of small-scale farmers, with each small farmer owning less than two hectares of land and producing approximately 3,000 pounds of coffee per hectare. Organic cultivation has a very long and quite common history in Peru, primarily because local farmers lack the opportunities or capital to invest in chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. However, in recent years, due to climate change, coffee leaf rust has spread successively in various countries. Because of organic cultivation methods, this has also caused significant reductions in Peru's coffee production.

Peruvian coffee is shade-grown in high-altitude regions, primarily featuring Arabica varieties. With gradual maturation during growth, the beans here have higher density and exhibit considerable flavor diversity. Among these, the highest altitude and most important coffee-producing region in Peru is Chanchamayo, located in the central highlands on the eastern side of the Andes Mountains. Following this are Amazonas and San Martín, situated in the northern highlands on the eastern side of the Andes Mountains.

The coffee-growing area in southern Peru accounts for 23% of the country's total, encompassing the regions of Apurímac, Ayacucho, Cusco, Madre de Dios, and Puno. Altitude ranges from 900 to 2,050 meters.
