Hawaii
Population: 1,404,000
Hawaii's coffee bean reputation mainly comes from "Kona." If you enjoy typical island coffee with lower acidity, more body, and less fruity flavor, other islands are also worth exploring.
Kona, Big Island
In Hawaii, the Kona region differs from many other growing areas. A more diversified industry is located in this region, with over 630 farms producing coffee. Typically operated by individual families, these farms are usually smaller than 2 hectares (5 acres). The yield rates here may be among the highest in the world. Meanwhile, coffee farms in this region are much smaller in scale compared to other areas of Hawaii, so manual harvesting is often visible.
Altitude: 150-900m
Harvest: August to January
Varieties: Typica
Kauai Island
The Kauai growing area is dominated by a single company operating 1,250 hectares (3,100 acres) of coffee production. Kauai Coffee Company began growing coffee in the late 1980s, reducing sugarcane cultivation to diversify agricultural production. Due to the company's large scale, it is a highly mechanized farm.
Altitude: 30-180m
Harvest: October to December
Varieties: Yellow Catuai, Red Catuai, Typica, Blue Mountain, Mundo Novo
Exceptional! Kona Coffee Nurtured by the Tears of Hawaii's Volcano Goddess
The volcanoes on the Big Island are goddesses that local residents both fear and love. They fear the goddess's anger, which could destroy their homes in an instant, yet they also love the tears left behind by the angered goddess. High-temperature, thick lava, after cooling, forms special soil textures, becoming one of the unique growth conditions for "Kona coffee." Plants need sunlight for growth, but coffee beans also require appropriate shade. Surrounded by the sea on all sides, Hawaii's climate is regulated by seawater. Morning sunlight becomes gentle through water vapor, and by noon, the mountain water vapor condenses into fog, protecting the tree species.
Without high mountains blocking the view, white clouds in the sky surge with the wind, forming a sunshade umbrella that automatically opens and closes with natural rhythms. In the coffee world, "Kona coffee" is like a girl from a noble family, receiving the most gentle care from nature.
"Kona coffee" is not native to the Big Island. The earliest records trace back to 1813 when the Spanish planted the first coffee tree. However, it truly flourished in the 19th century. Its lineage inherits from "Arabica," one of the world's three major coffee varieties. It is not as strong as Italian coffee, nor does it have the robust taste of Central and South American coffee. The combination of acidity and sweetness is very gentle, with fruit aromas detectable in the aftertaste. Those who dislike it find "Kona coffee" too light, but this "fresh and natural" flavor in the coffee world is uniquely embodied by "Kona coffee."
