In recent years, Nicaragua coffee has not gained high recognition in China. Besides traditional high-altitude Typica varieties, Maragogype (also known as elephant beans) and Java varieties, coffee enthusiasts rarely mention it. In fact, Nicaragua's coffee growing conditions are no less favorable than those of Central American countries. Coffee grown at high altitudes under shade has a rounded, balanced flavor with less sharp acidity. Along with its northern neighbor Honduras, it has become another coffee trend in Central America over the past couple of years. Annual export revenues reach $200 million, with 33,000 families nationwide engaged in coffee production, providing approximately 200,000 jobs. Premium coffee beans mostly come from the central Jinotega and Matagalpa regions. In recent years, coffee varieties have been dominated by Caturra, complemented by some Typica and Bourbon. Premium Nicaragua coffee bags are printed with "S.H.G." (Strictly High Grown), indicating coffee beans produced at high altitudes.
Jinotega: The Heart of Nicaragua Coffee
Jinotega (Spanish: Jinotega, Spanish pronunciation: [xinoˈteɣa]) is a city located in the Jinotega province of Nicaragua. Its geographical position is situated in an elongated valley, surrounded by mountains, resulting in a cool climate. It lies 142 kilometers north of Nicaragua's capital, Managua. This region produces 80% of Nicaragua's coffee, mainly exported to the United States, Russia, Canada, and Europe.
Cultivation and Processing Methods
Nicaragua's coffee is mainly produced in the central and northern regions. Among these, coffee beans from the Jinotega region are naturally grown products at an altitude of 1,200 meters. Shade cultivation is their characteristic, and coffee beans are processed using the washed method and sun-dried.
Flavor Profile and Characteristics
Generally speaking, Nicaragua coffee lacks extremely distinctive characteristics, so common Nicaragua beans are often used for blended coffee or instant coffee. However, high-quality Nicaragua beans, such as Maragogipe, receive high praise. Its coffee beans are very large, earning them the name "elephant beans." Because the flavor is relatively balanced, unlike other Central American coffees that often carry bright fruit acidity, it has a clean taste and excellent richness. This rounded and smooth texture also makes it stand out among Nicaragua coffee beans, loved by many people.
