The Rich Coffee Heritage of Costa Rica
In 1729, coffee first appeared in Costa Rica, introduced from Cuba. This made Costa Rica the first country in Central America to cultivate coffee and the first to grow it for commercial value. Subsequently, after Costa Rica gained independence from Spain in 1821, the local government began to implement a series of policies to strongly support the coffee industry. By this time, more than a century after coffee was introduced to Costa Rica, approximately 70,000 coffee trees had already been planted, demonstrating its rapid development.
Quality Assurance Through Legislation
To enhance coffee quality and value, in the early 20th century, the government established legislation requiring that all coffee farms or plantations within Costa Rica could only grow Arabica varieties, thereby boosting competitiveness. This explains why Costa Rican coffee quality is so superior today: all coffee from Costa Rica is Arabica, and you will absolutely not find any Robusta varieties.
Tarrazú: Costa Rica's Premier Coffee Region
Tarrazú is one of Costa Rica's world-renowned coffee producing regions, located about two hours' drive south of the capital San José. Due to Tarrazú's considerably high altitude, the coffee it produces has rich and pleasant flavors, making it one of Costa Rica's most valued growing areas.
Dota: The Crown Jewel of Tarrazú
Dota is considered the most premium growing area within the Tarrazú region. In Dota, farmland averages between 1,200-1,700 meters in altitude, combined with very abundant annual rainfall and long sunshine hours (averaging 2,150 hours per year). As a result, sun-processed coffee beans exhibit excellent quality: the beans are hard and full-bodied, with smooth acidity and rich flavors when brewed.
