Ethiopia's Administrative Structure
First, let's understand Ethiopia's four-tier administrative structure: Province - Zone - Woreda - Kebele. The Yirgacheffe legally designated production area, as officially regulated by Ethiopia, is distributed across two zones with a total of eight woredas:
Gedeo Zone: Dilla, Wenago, Bule, Yirgacheffe, Kochere, Gedeb
Borena Zone: Abaya, Gelena
The Gedeb Region
The entire Gedeb woreda area has an altitude of at least 1,950 meters. Coffee farms situated at 2,000-2,200 meters are still considered relatively low, while many coffee trees are planted on slopes at 2,200-2,400 meters. Such altitude conditions naturally dominate the entire Yirgacheffe production region, making it easy for coffee professionals to find exceptional batches!
Gedeb coffee refers to coffee beans produced in Gedeb Woreda of the Gedeo Zone.
Gedeb is a woreda with the same administrative level as Kochere, not a village within Kochere town! (Kochere town has a total of 25 kebeles, and none of them is called Gedeb.) Sometimes buyers get confused because it is indeed the most remote: starting from Yirgacheffe town, you need to travel at least another 40 kilometers. But that only gets you to Gedeb town - to reach villages like Worka Sakaro, Halo Bariti, Banko Gotiti, Banko Dahato, etc., you need to travel another dozen kilometers of dirt roads, which is quite challenging! However, purchasing coffee beans from this region is absolutely worth it!
