1. What is Single Origin Coffee?

Single origin coffee refers to coffee made from single-origin coffee beans. For example, what you can typically taste in specialty coffee shops includes Yirgacheffe, Mandheling, etc.

2. Is Black Coffee Single Origin Coffee?

Black coffee refers to coffee without any added sugar or creamer. Yes, single origin coffee is black coffee, but black coffee is not necessarily single origin. Some blend coffees are also suitable for pour-over or siphon brewing. Because the final product is no different from single origin, they are easily confused.

3. What is Specialty Coffee?

Specialty coffee is what everyone calls Cappuccino, Latte, Mocha - made with Espresso as the base, then milk foam created by steam, plus other additions. Specialty coffee beans are made from blend beans to create a more balanced and rich flavor.

Coffee concentrate extracted through high pressure by an espresso machine is called espresso coffee. All coffee with espresso plus milk or milk foam is called milk coffee, or milk coffee for short. Espresso base liquid with other additions like cream, ice cubes, or alcohol is called Italian creative coffee. There are no specific naming standards - call it whatever you want. All coffee extracted using an espresso machine is called espresso coffee.

Drip coffee has low concentration, while pour-over extraction techniques are more refined and can highlight the flavor characteristics of the coffee's origin. Therefore, the two major categories of coffee classified by extraction method are pour-over coffee and espresso coffee.

Pour-over coffee has the characteristic of highlighting origin flavors, so you can often see coffees in cafés named after countries like "Kenya" and "Colombia," or specific region names like "Yirgacheffe" and "Sidamo," or even specific estate names like "Finca El Diviso" and "Monte Cristo," or direct names of high-quality green beans like "Tianchi Bird" and "Zhanwang." These coffees made from single bean varieties are also called single origin coffee, each with its own flavor characteristics. Most are produced through pour-over extraction. However, single origin coffee can also be extracted using espresso methods, so single origin coffee is not equal to pour-over coffee.
