The Guji production area in southern Ethiopia borders the Sidamo and Gedeo regions, featuring diverse topography with towering mountains, highlands, plateaus, valleys, and plains. The region's geology consists of fertile, well-drained volcanic soil with depths reaching nearly two meters, with surface soil appearing dark brown or brown. The area's greatest advantage lies in its soil fertility, maintained through the natural recycling of organic matter, using fallen leaves and debris from surrounding forests and plant roots as natural fertilizers.
Ethiopia's Major Coffee Regions
Ethiopian coffee primarily comes from eight major production regions: Ekempti, Limu, Illubabor, Djimma, Harrar, Teppi/Bebeka, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe.
Ethiopian coffee enjoys extremely high regard in Taiwan, with Taiwanese coffee enthusiasts showing particular interest and passion for three renowned regions: Harrar, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe. The Sidamo production area is located in southern Ethiopia, where agriculture dominates the local economy. Coffee-growing areas are situated around the Great Rift Valley. The largest town in Sidamo province is Hawassa, serving as an important coffee export hub.
Sidamo's coffee flavors are incredibly diverse due to varying soil compositions, regional microclimates, and countless native coffee varieties, resulting in distinct differences and characteristics in coffee produced by each town and region.
Shakisso: A Unique Coffee Region
Shakisso, located in the Guji region of southern Oromia, borders Sidamo and Gedeo. This area contains numerous mine pits, originally used for gold mining, creating dangerous conditions for walking through coffee-growing areas. Shakisso stands out as a unique production area within Guji/Sidamo, being a remote region far from most coffee-producing areas even within Sidamo. Gold mining is another famous local product.
Factors such as miners, land, and ethnic tensions created instability in the region during 2006. Consequently, the area now faces its greatest challenge: the need for manpower to maintain the growing areas and harvest coffee. Local small farmers began growing organic coffee in 2001, working closely with medium-sized coffee producers who are experienced in growing forest coffee in highland areas.
Sounds of Nature: A Heritage from Kossa Geshe Farm
The flavor is as beautiful as the sounds of nature—so natural and moving—this heirloom variety comes from Kossa Geshe Farm.
Sounds of Nature, this particular coffee bean, differs from the well-known Yirgacheffe and Sidamo varieties. The Limu production area has only recently begun to gain prominence in recent years. Limu is located southwest of Ethiopia's capital, with elevations ranging between 1,300-1,900 meters, while Djimma production area lies to the south. This 'Sounds of Nature' bean comes from the heirloom mixed varieties of the historic Kossa Geshe farm in Limu!
Kossa Geshe Farm is situated in the southern part of the Limu region at an elevation of 1,900 meters. Such a remote location is extremely difficult to find, yet Sounds of Nature lived up to expectations and achieved third place in that year's competition.
