Papua New Guinea Coffee Origin

Located east of the Indonesian archipelago, Papua New Guinea's predominantly highland terrain accommodates both large plantations/farms and smallholder cultivation, growing multiple coffee varieties. Papua New Guinea's coffee flavor profile differs significantly from other Asian regions such as Indonesia, South Asia's India, or Pacific island coffees. Compared to Indonesian beans (Sumatra, Sulawesi) that are mostly semi-washed (wet-hulled processed) and exhibit low acidity, rich body, and earthy notes, wet-processed Papua New Guinea coffee typically shows brighter, more fruity acidity, resembling Central American coffee flavors. Large plantations usually have their own wet processing mills, while smaller individual coffee farmers can better control the quality and flavor expression of their output.

Kimel Estate

Situated in Papua New Guinea's western highlands, the Kimel Valley region near the Kimel River, Kimel Estate, like many large farms/estates, has its own dedicated wet processing mill. In fact, this is an estate jointly owned by numerous independent small coffee farmers from the surrounding Opais people, making it, in a sense, a private cooperative. Due to excellent growing environment conditions and the processing mill's stable quality control processes, the produced coffee exhibits lively brightness while preserving a considerable degree of Papua New Guinea coffee's unique flavor characteristics.

Varietal Diversity

Another special feature lies in the diversity of coffee varieties cultivated at Kimel, so numerous that they cannot be counted on one hand: Typica, Arusha, Blue Mountain, Catimor, Caturra, and even more. In fact, just as one doesn't put all eggs in one basket, most farmers actually plant different varieties to avoid the risk of poor growth adaptation or production below expectations for any specific variety, which also creates interesting expressions of their coffee flavor characteristics.
