Samuel Processing Plant is a private processing facility located in the village of Gobita within the Yirgacheffe region. It was formed by a group of approximately 600 local small-scale coffee farming families who bring their harvested red coffee cherries to this processing plant for collective processing. As the entire village participates in the Dutch Red Cherry Project OCR (Note), the entire cultivation and production process is supervised and managed by assigned professional managers who provide guidance and advice on harvesting, production, and other procedures to increase yield and improve quality.
The Red Cherry Project (Operation Cherry Red) is a European Union initiative proposed by the Dutch government, with the primary goal of encouraging Ethiopian coffee farmers to produce higher quality coffee beans. The project was initiated and led by Trabocca BV, the Netherlands' largest green coffee importer, with partial funding sponsored by the Dutch government, providing financial loans to support new hardware equipment and technical assistance in production and processing knowledge to farmers.
