Drip Bag Iced Coffee Brewing Tutorial Step-by-Step Guide to Making Iced Coffee with Drip Coffee Bags
Have you felt it, friends? After these two days of thunderstorms have passed, the temperature has slowly started to rise, and the season for enjoying iced coffee is here again!!! However, while we want to drink coffee, we don't want to leave the house. So, is there a simple way to make delicious iced coffee at home? There really is! The versatile FrontStreet Coffee pulls out from their pocket:
"Drip Coffee Bags"
So today, let's follow FrontStreet Coffee to see how to easily make delicious iced coffee using drip coffee bags!
What is Drip Coffee?
As usual, let's first briefly introduce drip coffee! Simply put, drip coffee is a convenient, easy-to-make "pour-over coffee"! By pre-grinding coffee beans and sealing them in a special non-woven fabric filter bag, it becomes convenient to carry and easy to make.
The filter bag acts as filter paper to filter coffee grounds during brewing; while the paper "ears" on both sides that allow the bag to hang freely serve as the filter cup. You just need to hang these two "ears" on the rim of the cup to support the filter bag for coffee brewing, which is why it's called "drip coffee."
Drip coffee brewing can be very simple or quite sophisticated. The sophisticated method uses the same approach as pour-over, controlling precise parameters to brew a black coffee with excellent flavor; the simple method is really simple—water temperature and water injection are all done by eye~ This better suits the portable nature of drip coffee~
How to Make Delicious Iced Coffee with Drip Coffee?
Actually, it's very simple. There are two ways to make iced coffee: one is the drip method that you can drink immediately, and the other is the immersion method that requires a longer waiting time! But either way, the preparation is very simple~ So next, FrontStreet Coffee will elaborate on this.
1. Making with the Iced Pour-Over Method
That's right—adopting the iced brewing method from pour-over coffee is the fastest way to get a cup of iced drip coffee. Regular iced pour-over, based on hot brewing, increases extraction rate by adjusting the grind finer, then increases concentration by expanding the coffee-to-water ratio, and finally adds ice cubes for cooling and dilution—completing a delicious iced pour-over coffee.
However, drip coffee bags already have the coffee pre-ground, so we cannot increase extraction efficiency by adjusting the grind finer. Therefore, we need to find another way to increase extraction efficiency by adjusting other parameters. For example: increasing water temperature.
The reason we need to increase extraction rate is because we need to reduce water amount, increase coffee concentration, and leave enough space for ice cube dilution. This way, when ice cubes melt to quickly cool the coffee, it won't taste weak and thin. Regular brewing water temperature is 92°C (light roast beans)/88°C (dark roast beans). On this basis, we can increase it by 2°C~ If you don't have a thermometer, you can bring water to a boil and let it sit for about 1 minute (if pouring from the pot, extend the time by 30 seconds if not pouring)~
Normally, one drip coffee bag contains about 10g of coffee grounds. The iced pour-over coffee-to-water-to-ice ratio is 1:10:6, which translates to drip coffee bag parameters of 10g coffee, brewed with 100ml hot water, and 60g of ice cubes. The brewing steps are as follows:
① First, use a small amount of hot water for blooming—just enough to cover the coffee grounds, which is about 20ml of water. (Still recommend using a scale)
② Then, inject the remaining 80ml of hot water with a small water flow in small circles. If you don't have a small-spout kettle at home, you can use a regular kettle to pour, then use a small spoon or stick to stir for 10 circles~
③ Wait for the coffee to finish dripping, then pour the drip coffee into a container with ice cubes to mix—and a refreshing iced drip coffee is complete~
2. Making with the Cold Brew Method
Cold brew is very simple. Just prepare any sealable container, then tear open the drip coffee bag and pour the coffee grounds from the bag into the container with room temperature water according to the ratio (keep the empty drip coffee bag—don't throw it away). The coffee-to-water ratio is 1:10, meaning 10g of coffee grounds needs 100ml of room temperature water.
FrontStreet Coffee recommends using multiple bags for extraction at once, since one drip coffee bag might only yield about 80ml of coffee (the grounds will absorb water). Then place it in the refrigerator to extract overnight, and the next day, filter the coffee grounds through the drip coffee bag~
We can taste the concentration after filtering. If the concentration is suitable, no need to add ice; if it's too strong, just add ice cubes to dilute~
(It's easy to soak with short cups, so it's best to use tall cups~)
