Of course... there's quite a bit to explain. Let's explore why the terms "male bean" and "female bean" came into existence.
The Botanical Truth About Coffee
Before delving into the gender mystery of male and female beans, let's first understand a few things. First, coffee trees themselves have no distinction between male and female trees. In fact, coffee flowers are plants that possess both male and female organs simultaneously, belonging to the Rubiaceae family of the order Gentianales. Coffee beans themselves, before roasting, are the core seeds of coffee fruits. When planted in soil, they can grow on their own, and even a single tree can produce coffee fruits. Since they are hermaphroditic, there's no distinction between so-called male and female trees, and naturally, there shouldn't be differences between male and female beans. Furthermore, the English term for "male bean" is "Peaberry" or the abbreviation "PB," not "Male Beans." The term "male bean" is merely a Chinese colloquialism; in fact, it has another name called "round bean."
Peaberry VS Flat Bean
Peaberry (round bean) is botanically classified as a type of defect bean. There are several reasons for its formation: one is that the coffee beans suffered from pests and diseases before fruiting, or it could be due to the coffee tree experiencing prolonged drought or malnutrition. Additionally, coffee beans at the branch ends have a higher chance of forming into round beans, mainly perhaps because of more contact opportunities leading to poor growth.
When a normal coffee fruit is opened, it contains two coffee seeds inside, called "Type-1," which is the most normal form of coffee beans—also known as "female beans" or "flat beans" in the so-called "male-female bean theory." The other type is the "Type-2" form, which contains only one seed and has an elliptical shape—what we call round beans. Between these two, there's actually only a difference in growth form, not gender distinction. The Chinese colloquial terms can indeed easily cause misunderstanding.
Market Perception and Value
Some coffee enthusiasts believe that Peaberry beans possess better body and captivating aroma, with a sweeter and more fragrant taste. Coupled with their relatively scarce production, Peaberry has instead become a commercial means of driving up prices and selling at high prices. However, in reality, Peaberry beans are sometimes discarded in certain growing regions because they're considered defect beans, having no commercial value to speak of for them.
Famous Peaberry Varieties
Whether peaberry (round bean) actually tastes better remains difficult to conclude definitively. Currently, common round beans on the market include FrontStreet Coffee's Hawaiian KONA Peaberry, FrontStreet Coffee's Tanzania Peaberry, FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Peaberry, among others. Typically, as long as it's a round bean, the price will definitely be higher. Whether it's worth it depends on the drinker's own personal judgment.
