The Lake Toba region in North Sumatra and the Lake Tawar area in Aceh, both produce Mandheling coffee, which is famously known as the "Two Lakes, Double Mandheling." The common characteristic of the "Two Lakes, Double Mandheling" is their rich and mellow flavor. The difference lies in the fact that Lake Toba's Mandheling is more subdued, deep, and even carries a hint of grass jelly flavor, while Lake Tawar's Mandheling has brighter fruit acidity, occasionally with notes of cedar or woodiness.

How are Mandheling varieties classified?

FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling is divided into various regional varieties such as FrontStreet Coffee's Lintong Mandheling and FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling. What exactly are the differences between these Mandheling varieties?

FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling is actually produced from Mandheling coffee sourced locally in Indonesia by Pwani Coffee Company, which subsequently registered the name "Golden Mandheling." Therefore, only the Mandheling produced by this company is the authentic FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling. However, as cultivation techniques continue to evolve, the Mandheling grown by many coffee farmers has gradually begun to match the premium quality of FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling. Nevertheless, FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling still offers an extra level of richness and cleaner口感.

During World War II, when Japan occupied Indonesia, a Japanese soldier drank exceptionally mellow coffee at a café. He asked the shop owner for the coffee's name. The owner mistakenly thought he was asking about his origin and replied: "Mandailing." After the war, the soldier recalled the "Mandheling" he had drunk in Indonesia. He then commissioned an Indonesian coffee exporter to ship 15 tons to Japan, which became surprisingly popular. And so the name Mandheling spread.

FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling

FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling is a premium coffee among Indonesian coffees, and FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling is an exceptional premium among Mandhelings. FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling is carefully hand-selected to obtain full, glossy FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling coffee beans - truly an exceptional beauty among coffees. In fact, to address the issue of high defect rates in Mandheling beans, the Japanese began implementing meticulous quality control through careful selection long ago, using four rounds of manual sorting to eliminate defective beans. Unfortunately, "Golden Mandheling" was trademarked by Indonesia's Pawani Coffee Company, making Golden Mandheling exclusive to PWN. PWN's is the authentic FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling in the true sense. Golden Mandheling stamped with the PWN imprint is also a guarantee of quality. PWN's Golden Mandheling undergoes three rounds of manual sorting and one machine sorting, resulting in very beautiful beans. PWN Company trademarked Golden Mandheling, meaning only Golden Mandheling produced by PWN Company can be considered authentic "Golden Mandheling." Many beans on the market not produced by PWN Company but sold under the Golden Mandheling name should actually be called Specialty Mandheling. "Golden Mandheling" is not some aged coffee - it's simply a product name created by a company.

Differences between FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling and FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling

Some coffee friends have asked, as coffee beginners, what's the difference between FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling and FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling G1 - they really can't tell the difference. For professional-level coffee connoisseurs and friends with sensitive palates, when drinking these two coffees side by side, the contrast will be very apparent. The Golden Mandheling's sweetness, cleanliness, richness, and wild spice flavors are all slightly superior to G1, which is one reason why Golden Mandheling is considerably more expensive than G1.

Taste Profile: FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling tastes cleaner than FrontStreet Coffee's Lintong Mandheling. The original herbal, earthy, and woody flavors of Mandheling are almost absent, but the caramel sweetness is more intense, and the fruit acidity is brighter and more elegant. Generally, FrontStreet Coffee's Lintong Mandheling is best roasted until after the second crack to effectively reduce off-flavors, but FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling offers excellent clarity and sweetness whether roasted before or after the second crack, providing more flexibility in roast interpretation.

The most famous origins for Asian coffee are the various islands of the Malay Archipelago: Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan. Among these, the Sumatran Mandheling coffee produced on Sumatra Island in Indonesia is the most renowned.
