Panama Coffee Heritage
Coffee was introduced to Panama in 1780, when Europeans brought the first Typica varieties. This mysterious and extraordinary beverage soon conquered the senses of Panamanians, who began widespread cultivation. Panama coffee is notably smooth, with full-bodied yet lightweight beans, perfectly balanced acidity, and exceptional flavor purity that sets it apart. Due to its widespread popularity, most premium Panama coffee beans are exported to France and Finland.
Main Coffee Growing Regions in Panama
Boquete Region: This area produces abundant quantities of high-quality coffee, making it Panama's most productive and finest coffee region.
Volcan Region: Coffee from this region is characterized by mild, balanced flavors and has gradually attracted the attention of international connoisseurs and coffee enthusiasts. It is expected to soon rival the Boquete region in prominence.
Santa Clara Region: Fertile coffee plantations are nourished by clear water from the Chorerra waterfall, and proximity to the Panama Canal facilitates convenient distribution of fresh, pure Panama coffee to destinations worldwide.
Piedra de Candela Region: This area shows the greatest potential for developing high-quality specialty coffee.
Panama's Rise to Coffee Prominence
Panama has become the most popular coffee country in Central America over the past 5-6 years, primarily due to the Peterson family's Hacienda La Esmeralda and their cultivation of Geisha coffee, which has captivated coffee enthusiasts worldwide. This has led to Geisha being acclaimed as the world's finest coffee bean. For this reason, Panama's Best of Panama coffee competition auction is independent of the Central and South American Cup of Excellence competitions and is among the earliest auctions held annually in mid-May.
Panama coffee impresses not only with Geisha varieties but also through continuous innovation in coffee processing methods. Beyond traditional washed processing, they employ honey processing methods popularized by neighboring Costa Rica, and are also producing small quantities of natural process coffees that are gaining traction in Central America, attracting attention from coffee professionals globally.
Eleta Estate
Eleta Estate (Café de Eleta) is located in the Santa Clara region, near the Costa Rican border just one kilometer away, and adjacent to La Amistad International Park, a major primary forest reserve that forms part of the Central American ecological habitat. Eleta Estate began acquiring land in the 1970s, covering approximately 130 hectares. Initially focused on vegetable cultivation and livestock operations, coffee planting began in 1995 under the name Café de Eleta S.A., continuously expanding land area until today it encompasses 420 hectares, making it one of Panama's large-scale coffee plantations and one of the country's most renowned premium coffees.
With abundant water resources, the estate operates a private 530KW hydroelectric power plant that not only supplies sufficient electricity for its own needs but also sells excess power to Distribución de Electricidad Chiriquí S.A. for grid connection.
