"It's really too expensive! Can't compare with domestic prices."
"No coupons! No coupons! No coupons!!" "It's not cheap and you can't dine in. Singapore locals like to find a place to sit down and chat slowly."
"In Singapore, coffee costing over 1 Singapore dollar is everywhere, and most of it tastes good. At this price point, you can only take it away, so there's no real advantage."
Yesterday, Luckin Coffee opened two stores simultaneously in Singapore and entered a trial operation phase. Since both stores were established in large shopping centers, on opening day, the stores were crowded with people, and local consumers flocked to check in, place orders, and try something new.
Many Singapore friends mentioned that yesterday's group chat topics were all about "Have you tried Luckin Coffee yet," and check-in posts were all over the internet. There were still long queues before closing at night! Regardless of whether it tastes good or not, the hype alone is quite impressive!
The reason for the high level of discussion about Luckin Coffee's opening in Singapore is partly because people want to document the proud moment of domestic brands going overseas, partly because many Singapore friends have been looking forward to Luckin's Coconut Latte for a long time! Another reason is that Luckin Coffee is cheap and offers large portions domestically, so everyone is hoping that Luckin will offer similar discounts when it comes to Singapore.
However, while people posted check-ins, more than 80% were complaining: It's really too expensive! Although Luckin prepared a first cup discount of 0.99 Singapore dollars (approximately RMB 5.1) in Singapore, it requires downloading the Singapore region Luckin APP. However, many people's phones are set to the China region, so they don't support the app download.
If you can't download the app, you can only use the web page to place orders. The first cup costs 4 Singapore dollars (approximately RMB 20.6), while the second cup can only be purchased at the original price of 6.4 Singapore dollars (approximately RMB 33). This pricing has already caught up with Starbucks' pricing in Singapore, and there are no coupons whatsoever. The product price range is 4.8-6.8 Singapore dollars.
Secondly, some netizens also reflected that local consumers are still more accustomed to using cash payments, while Luckin only accepts online payments. Although there are very detailed instructions on-site, consumers might find it troublesome and not make repeat purchases. Some tourists from other countries also cannot place orders.
The author also chatted with several Singapore netizens, and everyone mentioned local traditional coffee shop products and the local chain coffee brand "Flash Coffee."
Based on conversations with several netizens, everyone initially guessed that Luckin's pricing would be similar to Flash (Flash's Americano costs 3.5 Singapore dollars, latte costs 5 Singapore dollars). In reality, Luckin's regular Americano is priced at 4.8 Singapore dollars, and latte at 5.6 Singapore dollars. The pricing of other popular products is almost on par with Starbucks (regular products around 7-8 Singapore dollars).
Local people (regardless of gender or age) mainly choose traditional coffee shops for their coffee. One reason is that the taste of these traditional coffees is very familiar to everyone, very daily, and very refreshing, while also being a form of traditional culture.
Due to different raw materials and brewing methods, drinking pure black coffee directly would be very bitter and strong, so these traditional coffees come in many varieties and are very cheap. You can get a good-tasting coffee for 1-2 Singapore dollars. When some young people need espresso-based products, they choose Flash, which offers great value for money. Going to Starbucks is more about borrowing the coffee shop space to chat/talk about work/study. Therefore, with such pricing and no leisure space provided, Luckin is believed to have too many advantages in the long run.
Luckin in different regions will certainly have some price differences. In fact, the original price of Luckin in China is the same, but the price displayed on the APP already has initial discounts, plus you can stack coupons, which is why the price appears cheap. After all, it has just joined the overseas market, and many things haven't stabilized yet. Once Luckin gets on track in the Singapore market, there may be more discounts in price.
