The Alleged Huawei Coffee Shop Investment

About a week ago, multiple media outlets reported that Huawei had exclusively invested in a coffee shop.

On February 8th, the official WeChat account of Jiangsu Bage'ai Coffee Management Co., Ltd. announced that it had recently received an angel-round financing of tens of millions of RMB, exclusively invested by Huawei, with Zhongyue Chrysanthemum E-commerce acting as financial advisor.

FrontStreet Coffee published related coverage. The next day, a media affairs department reached out to clarify that the investment had nothing to do with Huawei the company — it was, rather, the personal action of an individual surnamed "former Huawei."

After the February 8th announcement, several media outlets ran stories and then quickly deleted them. Yet on February 13th, Bage'ai Coffee Management Co., Ltd. was still publishing articles claiming "Huawei's exclusive investment," without mentioning that it was the "personal exclusive investment of a former Huawei employee."

The discussion didn't die down — if anything, the Huawei angle pulled even more people into the conversation.

Public Apology and Clarification

On February 15th, Bage'ai Coffee Management Co., Ltd. issued an apology through its official WeChat account, admitting that its previous posts had repeatedly used "Huawei," "HW," "Huawei's sole investment," "Huawei's managing partner," and "HW's exclusive investment," along with commentary on Bage'ai's business and technology — and that these constituted false advertising built on fabricated facts.

The company clarified that the matters described had no connection whatsoever with Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., and apologized for causing public misunderstanding, infringing on Huawei's legitimate rights and interests, and damaging Huawei's brand and reputation. It further pledged never again to engage in false publicity involving Huawei or any conduct that infringes on the company's legitimate rights.
