The Rise of Chinese-Style Coffee

According to data from lifestyle service e-commerce platforms, in the third quarter of this year, searches for "coffee + art" keywords increased by 3025% year-on-year. Since the beginning of this year, user searches for "specialty coffee" increased by 207% year-on-year, while "Chinese-style coffee" search popularity rose by 4713% year-on-year.
Chinese-style coffee is gaining increasing attention for two main reasons: one is the rise of local coffee brands, which has made coffee prices return to affordability. The other is the continuous improvement in quality of Yunnan coffee in recent years, combined with strong support and promotion from local brands, and under the trend of supporting domestic products, more and more consumers are gaining deeper understanding of Chinese coffee.
Meanwhile, with the new generation of consumers' demand for "national trends" and "local culture," many coffee shops are catering to the public by gradually blending their styles and coffee offerings with representative local foods, culinary cultures, and traditional styles. Through cultural consensus, coffee, as a foreign product, is embarking on the path of Sinicization.
Debate and Innovation in Chinese-Style Coffee
Serving coffee in traditional Chinese tableware, decorating in traditional Chinese styles, and innovative coffees featuring regional culinary cultures—whether these Chinese-style coffee developments are good or bad varies in everyone's opinion.
However, as visually-oriented beings, humans gradually close the distance between Chinese people and coffee through product packaging, which helps Chinese people recognize and accept coffee. This then gradually extends to promoting Yunnan-grown coffee, and eventually forms a coffee culture that can represent China.
The current situation of Chinese-style coffee cannot yet compare with established schools like Italian, Japanese, or Australian styles, but they all share one common ground—the exploration of breaking boundaries. No style was recognized from the beginning; only with daring attempts and promotion can it one day be recognized by people in its region and gradually spread to the world.
Future of Chinese-Style Coffee
Although Chinese-style coffee has not yet formed its unique coffee extraction method and a coffee culture familiar to people worldwide, these continuous and multi-directional innovations are all meaningful. These novel explorations have repeatedly captured the attention of mass consumers and have become hot topics of conversation among ordinary people after meals, which is in itself good news.
Whether Chinese-style coffee can eventually form its own school still needs to be verified by time. But at least it allows Chinese people to feel that coffee is part of daily life—it can be brewed as delicately as tea, and like new-style tea drinks, it can be created with more possibilities. Only through continuous innovation can more people accept coffee.
