Starbucks Exits Russian Market as Local Company Acquires All Assets

Following Starbucks' announcement on March 8th to suspend operations in Russia and its sudden declaration on May 24th to exit the Russian market entirely, the brand's 130 stores in the country remained vacant and unattended for several months.

Until July 9th, local media revealed that renowned Russian catering company Pinskiy & Co would acquire all of Starbucks' assets in Russia and reopen them under a new name, though the transaction had not yet been completed.

Then yesterday evening (local time July 30th), Russian rapper Timati suddenly announced on his Instagram account that Pinskiy & Co had completed the acquisition of Starbucks' assets in Russia, though he did not disclose the financial details of the transaction.

According to the announcement, Starbucks' assets in Russia were jointly acquired and will be managed by Anton Pinsky, founder of the renowned local catering company Pinskiy & Co, and Russian rapper Timati.

He noted that consumers should not expect major rebranding, but he invited Russians to participate in creating the new name and logo design. He also emphasized his intention to make this brand even better than the world-famous "mermaid" from across the ocean.

Timati also mentioned that the first store would open in August, with over 200 stores set to open with the best renovations by September.

Anton Pinsky also responded on Instagram, confirming the rapper Timati's post. He stated that the coffee shop's name and logo are currently under heated discussion.

New Coffee Chain Brand Emerges Without Name or Logo

Based on the above information, this new coffee chain brand has yet to decide on a brand name or logo, but has already announced that the first store will meet the world in August, with plans to expand to over 200 stores by September... This makes one wonder what name they might choose—abaaba (just kidding!).

Background of Starbucks' Withdrawal from Russia

Due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, Starbucks former CEO Kevin Johnson issued an open letter condemning Russia's unprovoked, unjust, and horrific attacks on Ukraine, and decided to stop franchising operations in Russia, donating related expenses to humanitarian causes for the besieged country.

More than a month after announcing the suspension of franchising, Starbucks suddenly announced its complete withdrawal from the Russian market. Subsequently, all 130 stores entered a state of closure, and employees were dismissed after receiving six months' salary.

Acquisition Details and Future Plans

In early July, Starbucks' Russian business was taken over by Anton Pinsky, founder of the renowned local catering company Pinskiy & Co. At that time, the catering company owner did not disclose the terms and details of the transaction.

However, Pinsky had previously mentioned that when Starbucks headquarters suspended its Russian operations in March, he had approached the former owners of Starbucks in Russia and made an acquisition offer. "Judging by the fact that we are now closing the deal, we made the most correct offer."

Previously, Russian market analysts predicted that the acquisition of Starbucks' Russian business would amount to between 1.6 and 3 billion rubles. However, given the potential continued decline of the US dollar exchange rate at that time, it was not impossible that the deal could be completed within 700 million rubles.

Future of Russian Coffee Culture

The acquisition of Starbucks' Russian business has now been settled, meaning that Starbucks, like McDonald's, will be renamed and resume operations. On June 12th, the Russian McDonald's was renamed "Vkusno i tochka" (Tasty and that's it) and reopened.

The first renamed store will also appear in August. Next, what name and logo will the Russian version of Starbucks present? It's truly something to look forward to!
