The Transformation of Street Newsstands

Street newsstands have changed. In the past, people would go to newsstands asking, "Boss, has 'Story Collection' arrived yet?" or "I'm taking the water, leaving the money here!" Now, people go to newsstands saying, "Boss, a cup of coffee please!"

Speaking of newsstands, these small establishments have truly participated in a generation's childhood and youth. If we pull our memories back more than a decade, "buy a newspaper, get a magazine, purchase a bottle of water" might have been repeated countless times at newsstands. Today, however, street newsstands have transformed.

Newsstands are no longer just traditional places selling newspapers and magazines. Street newsstands are integrating more new elements—coffee shops.

Indeed, Wenzhou now has a "Newsstand Coffee Shop," and Shenzhen has also opened its first "Newsstand Coffee Shop."

Wenzhou's Newsstand Coffee Shop

A newsstand on Wenzhou's streets has quietly transformed into a coffee shop. According to reports, a newsstand coffee shop named "EPISODE DAILY. 每日事件" is located next to Xiaogao Bridge on Fuqian Street in downtown Wenzhou, making it the second newsstand coffee shop in the city.

This newsstand coffee shop is the first boutique coffee convenience kiosk resulting from the collaboration between EPISODE DAILY. 每日事件 and China Post.

From the pictures, this coffee shop primarily features purple and green color schemes, with a relatively small space area.

In terms of product categories, this newsstand coffee shop doesn't sell milk coffee, only American coffee.

The American coffee offerings include regular Americano, cucumber Americano (their signature), sparkling Americano, and beer coffee (non-alcoholic).

Shenzhen's Newsstand Coffee Shop

Shenzhen has also opened a "Newsstand Coffee Shop." This newsstand coffee shop was also converted from a traditional newsstand, named iuGis, located in Yuanling New Village in Futian District, making it Shenzhen's first newsstand coffee shop.

The small space, apart from the coffee preparation area, has only one table and three chairs, with the coffee shop focusing primarily on takeaway coffee.

640-5

The entire shop's decoration style features dark green, with extensive use of dark green tones on the exterior walls, creating a stark contrast with the red coffee cups inside the store.

The shop also retains the original flavor of a newsstand, with traditional newspapers updated daily still available at the entrance.

640-6

Compared to traditional coffee shops, the biggest feature of this store is that you can drink coffee while reading newspapers (the dream of coffee in one hand and newspaper in the other has come true, haha).

In terms of beverage categories, iuGis coffee offers multiple types of American coffee, such as Beibeiyang Americano and oil citrus Americano.

In addition, we previously reported that two "Newsstand Coffee Shops" also appeared in Hangzhou. Those interested can check out this article: (👇Previous report, click the blue text to jump to the original article) "New Look! Two Newsstands in Hangzhou Transform into Coffee Shops!!"

The Future of Newsstands

In the era when the internet was not developed, newsstands mostly served as "telescopes," through which many people learned about the more exciting world outside. However, with today's advanced information technology, fewer and fewer people read paper newspapers and magazines, and fewer people notice the existence of newsstands. Due to poor business, there are more and more reports about "newsstands being demolished in xx places."

Introducing coffee shops into newsstands might be one of the good innovative approaches. In the future, newsstands might appear in other innovative forms. But regardless of the form they take, the ultimate intention is to progress with the times and become better together, which is enough.

Final Thoughts

Finally, in today's internet普及时代, how long has it been since you put down your phone and walked into a newsstand? For coffee shops transformed from street newsstands, would you go visit them?
