Nowadays, most coffee consumption still focuses on the environmental experience. Every city has no shortage of industrial-style coffee shops that have invested hundreds of thousands in their decor.
The coffee shop we're introducing today is different—there's no issue with decoration because this coffee shop is mobile, traveling over 40 kilometers round trip daily. This coffee shop and its owner were even featured in CCTV's documentary "Flavors of Life."
Owner Liu Yunping's connection with coffee began on a rainy evening in 2003, and since then, he has been deeply immersed in the world of coffee. He first started two coffee shops as an entrepreneur, but due to poor management, both shops, which had operated for five years, closed down in 2010.
According to reports from Fuzhou Evening News, Liu Yunping originally worked in lacquer painting art. Due to a family incident, he resigned from his lacquer painting job and returned to his hometown. Later, he came up with the idea of combining a coffee shop with a lacquer painting studio. Since the required investment was too large, he conceived the bold idea of selling coffee by bicycle. "Bicycle Coffee" thus quietly opened at the end of April 2018.
On the Dianping app, the business can be found under the name "Bicycle Coffee," while the paper cups and glass bottles used by the owner are printed with "SCENIC COFFEE," along with the owner's WeChat contact information.
Every day, the owner brings four to five types of coffee beans and several liters of water, cycling from his home in Qishan, a suburb of Fuzhou, to over 20 kilometers away at Yantai Mountain to set up his stall. He packs up at six o'clock every evening and returns home, cycling over 40 kilometers daily.
According to netizens' reports, this mobile bicycle coffee shop frequently appears at No. 2 Aiguo Road in Fuzhou, near Yantai Mountain Park. This coffee shop has no exquisite decoration, no pleasant music—only the bicycle's rear seat serving as the coffee brewing workstation, and a meticulous barista.
Even for the smallest coffee stall, the tools on the workstation are complete—electronic scale, pour-over kettle, thermometer, filter cup, filter paper, sharing pot, and hand-crank coffee grinder—everything is fully equipped.
The Menu
The menu is divided into pour-over series and cold brew series. Not counting the types of coffee beans, there are six options in total. According to Fuzhou Evening News, the bicycle coffee shop always has coffee beans from Ethiopia and Yunnan, and all coffee beans are traditionally roasted by the owner at home.
Future Dreams and Aspirations
The owner has reached middle age but still moves forward courageously for what he loves. According to Fuzhou Evening News reports from 2019, when the owner was planning to sell coffee by bicycle in 2018, he also set his sights on creating a coffee farm at home.
He purchased 20 one-to-three-year-old coffee tree seedlings from Yunnan to trial plant in Qishan, and additionally bought seeds for cultivation.
Impact and Inspiration
After the owner's story of moving his coffee shop onto a bicycle was featured in a CCTV documentary, more people with coffee ideals have followed suit, opening their own mobile coffee shops on familiar city roads. While dreams are beautiful and passion is essential, one must act within their capabilities—after all, not everyone has the courage to start over.
Bicycle (Scenic) Coffee is truly inspiring. Once you find your direction, as long as your inner spirit is strong enough, you can soar despite obstacles around you. This perfectly validates the saying "where there's a will, there's a way."
