FrontStreet Coffee — Introduction to Guatemala Huehuetenango Coffee

Guatemala's coffee is renowned worldwide for its rich taste and abundant flavors, making it a favorite among many coffee enthusiasts who appreciate its distinctive smoky character.

Guatemala is a country in Central America, bordered by coffee-producing nations such as Mexico and El Salvador. Its high altitude — over 1,500 meters above sea level — combined with tropical rainforest and volcanic geology, gives Guatemalan coffee its unique and distinctive flavors.

Guatemalan coffee features a rich, full-bodied taste with elegant, lively acidity. The country has eight coffee-producing regions, and today we'll introduce one of them: Huehuetenango.

Huehuetenango is one of Guatemala's premium coffee regions, located in the most remote northwestern highlands. It grows Arabica varieties at 1,800-2,100 meters, making it the highest-altitude and driest coffee region in the country.

Huehuetenango is unique among Guatemala's regions in being a non-volcanic coffee-producing area. Because of its elevation, it is also known as the "Huehuetenango Highlands." The high altitude and abundant rainfall slow the coffee's maturation, letting the beans absorb more nutrients and develop more aromatic compounds and fructose — which is why this region produces typical strictly hard beans. Not only are these beans high in quality with excellent flavors, but they are also champions among Guatemala's coffees.

Coffee varieties come down to three great species — Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica — and virtually all specialty coffee belongs to Arabica, whose complex, pure flavors take on a distinctive character in each growing region. Guatemala's Huehuetenango, with its highest-in-the-country altitudes and dry, sunny days, produces exactly the kind of layered, elegant Arabica that FrontStreet Coffee loves to share.
