FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Guatemala Huehuetenango Coffee

Guatemala's coffee is renowned worldwide for its rich taste and abundant flavors, making it a favorite among many coffee enthusiasts who appreciate its distinctive smoky character.

Guatemala is a country in Central America, bordered by many coffee-producing nations such as Mexico and El Salvador. Guatemala's high altitude, reaching over 1,500 meters above sea level, combined with its tropical rainforests and volcanic geological conditions, gives Guatemalan coffee its unique and distinctive flavors.

Guatemalan coffee features a rich, full-bodied taste with elegant and lively acidity. Guatemala has eight coffee-producing regions. Today, we'll introduce one of these regions: Huehuetenango.

Huehuetenango is one of Guatemala's premium coffee-producing regions, located in the most remote northwestern highlands of Guatemala. It cultivates Arabica varieties at altitudes between 1,800-2,100 meters, making it the highest altitude and driest climate coffee region in Guatemala.

Huehuetenango is unique among Guatemala's many volcanic regions as it is a non-volcanic coffee-producing area. This region has the driest climate and highest altitude among all Guatemalan coffee regions. Due to its high elevation, Huehuetenango is also known as the "Huehuetenango Highlands." The high altitude, abundant rainfall, and volcanic soil slow down the coffee maturation period, allowing the coffee beans to absorb more nutrients, develop more aromatic compounds and fructose, resulting in typical strictly hard beans from this region. Not only are these beans of high quality with excellent flavors, but they are also champion among Guatemala's coffees.
