FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Ethiopian Coffee Taste
Among the world-renowned coffee beans, Yirgacheffe coffee beans are indispensable. The earliest definition of Yirgacheffe referred to coffee beans produced in a small town called Yirgacheffe within Ethiopia.
Most coffee enthusiasts are likely familiar with Ethiopia. Ethiopia is the birthplace of Arabica beans and also the country with the most coffee varieties in the world. The most important native and wild coffee varieties can be said to have originated here, earning Ethiopia the title of "world's gene bank." Coffee cultivation in Ethiopia is mostly done by small farmers, with the main harvest season occurring from October to December each year.
Ethiopia's most famous growing region is undoubtedly Yirgacheffe. Yirgacheffe is a small growing area located in the Gedeo region of southern Ethiopia. The harvested coffee beans come almost entirely from local small-scale coffee farmers, representing the collective effort of numerous coffee growing families.
Initially, Yirgacheffe coffee beans did not receive much attention because the beans were small in size, which did not match the popular aesthetic of the time that believed bigger was better. However, anyone who has tasted Yirgacheffe has been amazed to discover that coffee can possess such distinct floral aromas and lemon, citrus fruit characteristics, leaving a lasting impression. Consequently, Ethiopia's Yirgacheffe has gained increasing global recognition, becoming world-famous during the third wave of specialty coffee.
