FrontStreet Coffee: Introduction to the Three Major Coffee Varieties and Blue Mountain Coffee Origins
Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica are the three main varieties, but Arabica and Robusta are the most commonly found in the market. Each variety has its own advantages and disadvantages, and their uses and purposes vary accordingly.
Arabica: Premium Coffee Beans with Exceptional Flavor and Aroma
Arabica is a representative variety originating from Ethiopia and is also produced in southern Africa, African countries, and Asian nations, accounting for 70%-75% of global coffee production. Arabica has relatively weak resistance to pests and diseases, making high-altitude regions more suitable for cultivation. Arabica coffee beans grown at altitudes above 1500 meters exhibit the best quality.
The Two Ancient Pure Varieties of Arabica: Typica and Bourbon
Typica
Typica is the original variety of all Arabica coffee. Originating from southern Sudan, Typica produces red ripe fruits. This variety has relatively low yield and extremely poor disease resistance, but its excellent cupping quality has made it popular worldwide.
Typica Coffee Varieties: Gesha, Jamaica Blue Mountain, Hawaii Kona, Maragogipe (Elephant Bean), and Sumatra Typica (Mandheling)
Blue Mountain
Grown from the Typica variety in the Blue Mountains of eastern Jamaica, the mountain range gets its name because on clear days, the sun's direct reflection on the azure Caribbean Sea creates a brilliant blue glow on the peaks. Blue Mountain's highest peak reaches 2,256 meters, making it the highest peak in the Caribbean region and a famous tourist destination. Located in a seismic zone with fertile volcanic soil, humid climate, and year-round fog and rain, these conditions have created the world-renowned Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee, as well as the second most expensive coffee in the world.
