FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Geisha Coffee

Geisha Coffee from Panama's Hacienda La Esmeralda

The Geisha variety was discovered in the Geisha forest of Ethiopia in 1931 and then sent to the Coffee Research Institute in Kenya. In 1936, it was introduced to Uganda and Tanzania. Costa Rica introduced it in 1953. Panama's Geisha cultivation began in the 1970s when Mr. Francisco Serracin from the Pichinchal farm obtained seeds from Costa Rica's CATIE and started growing Geisha coffee. Due to its extremely low yield and the need to participate in auctions, this coffee bean can be considered truly precious.

The reason it became world-famous was quite accidental. Rudolph A. Peterson, a retired Swedish-American banker, purchased Hacienda La Esmeralda in Panama to enjoy his retirement. Unexpectedly, this unintentional venture flourished - the coffee trees on the estate bore fruit, and when submitted to coffee competitions, it achieved immediate fame, winning the national championship at the 2004 Panama Specialty Coffee Competition.

However, due to limited production, people turned to other countries to purchase Geisha coffee beans. Then, Hacienda La Esmeralda continued to win championships year after year, becoming practically a Panamanian national treasure. But recognition from Panama alone wasn't enough. In 2005, Hacienda La Esmeralda's Geisha defeated competitors from around the world in the SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America) competition, winning the title of World's Best. It won world championships again in 2006 and 2007, at which point Hacienda La Esmeralda's Geisha had become a sensational topic in coffee circles worldwide.

Geisha coffee green beans possess a beautiful, translucent blue-green color, as stunning as gemstones, with a jade-like smooth texture. They smell of fresh grass, peaches, berries, and have a unique milky sweetness characteristic of oolong tea that most coffee beans lack. It seems that aroma and flavor require associative thinking, but the subtle tea essence is something we can clearly perceive.
