FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to New World Varieties

The Origin of Coffee

The coffee industry has long regarded Robusta as the ugly sister of Arabica, but when scientists conducted genetic comparisons, they discovered that Robusta is actually one of Arabica's parents. The most likely birthplace of Arabica is southern Sudan, where Robusta cross-pollinated with another coffee species - Eugenioides, creating the entirely new Arabica. This new species has since branched out and spread to Ethiopia for continued propagation, which is why Ethiopia has long been considered the birthplace of coffee.

Originating from Ethiopia, Arabica has spread to various regions and, through repeated mutations and hybridization, has given rise to numerous coffee varieties. Some have been improved in quality and flavor, while others have been enhanced in environmental adaptability, disease resistance, and yield. Today, dozens of varieties have been developed, mainly including: Bourbon, Typica, Caturra, Catuai, Pacamara, Catimor, Maragogipe, Mundo Novo, Kent, Amarello, Variedad Colombia, and others.

Mundo Novo

Mundo Novo, also known as New World, is a natural hybrid variety of Typica and Bourbon. It has high yield, strong constitution, and good disease resistance, making it widely cultivated.

Caturra

Caturra is a Bourbon mutation variety with relatively high fruit yield. It grows shorter, making it easy to harvest, and comes in both red and yellow fruit varieties.
