FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Sumatra Coffee

Well-known representative coffees: Java (Java), Sumatra Mandheling. Indonesia's coffee bean-producing areas are mainly concentrated on three islands: Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi, all of which feature volcanic terrain.

Sumatra Island

Sumatra Island is the sixth largest island in the world and the second largest island of Indonesia after Kalimantan Island (Borneo), with its economic status second only to Java Island. It covers an area of 434,000 square kilometers, including affiliated islands of approximately 475,000 square kilometers, accounting for 1/4 of the country's total land area.

The ancient name of Sumatra Island was suvara dvīpa (Sanskrit: "Golden Island"), and it was also referred to as "Golden Island" in Chinese literature. The Malay name Pulaw Emas also refers to the Golden Island, as gold has been produced in the mountainous regions of Sumatra since ancient times. In the 16th century, the reputation of "Golden Island" attracted many Portuguese explorers to travel to Sumatra in search of gold.
