FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha
Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha is praised as the "world's best" and is in short supply every year. It is also known as the rarest coffee bean and has a history of over a century.
Hacienda La Esmeralda is a very famous coffee plantation in Panama. It is located in Boquete, Panama's specialty coffee growing region. The area primarily grows Typica, Bourbon, Catuai, and Geisha varieties. Due to its dedication to the natural environment and special care, it has received Rainforest Alliance certification. Hacienda La Esmeralda possesses a unique plantation environment and green bean processing technology, making its coffee beans beloved by many.
The History of Hacienda La Esmeralda
Hacienda La Esmeralda was originally established in 1940 by a Swedish man named Hans Elliot. It covered hundreds of hectares including what are now the Palmira and Canas Verdes farms. In 1967, it was acquired by Swedish-American banker Rudolph. With the rise of specialty coffee in North America in the mid-1990s, Hacienda La Esmeralda received unprecedented opportunities for development. In the following years, the plantation continued to expand and dedicated itself to specialty coffee research.
Finally, in 2004, Geisha made its name at the Panama auction, winning the top prize, and everything went smoothly since then. Today, there are over 400 hybrid coffees and multiple variety research projects established. Geisha is famous worldwide for its special aroma and unique taste.
Origin and Classification of Geisha
Geisha originally comes from the Bensa Maji region of Ethiopia. Due to strict restrictions on ojo de gallo, it was brought to Hacienda La Esmeralda, where the Peterson family developed and promoted it. Panama Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha is officially divided into three types: Esmeralda Special (Geisha Red Label), Esmeralda Private Collection (Geisha Green Label), and Esmeralda Geisha 1500 (Geisha Blue Label).
The Three Labels of Geisha
Geisha Red Label is praised as the world's best flavor and is the competition variety. It consists of Geisha beans from an average altitude of 1600-1800 meters, with an average score of 90+. It comes in both natural and washed processes and is distributed across 12-17 areas in five major plantations. Among them, Jaramillo, Canas Verdes, and Bouquet are the most famous.
Geisha Green Label is the remainder from Geisha Red Label auctions, with varying quality. It is a mixture of 80+ and 90+ beans, and the taste is not as uniformly delicate. The altitude remains at 1600-1800 meters.
Geisha Blue Label is a new experimental variety that does not participate in auctions. The altitude is 1500 meters. It is considered inferior to the Red and Green Labels. It is jokingly called "dwarf Geisha" but actually has first-class taste.
Geisha is one of the few coffee bean plantations that conducts public auctions for registered merchants. Its top gift boxes include all the landmarks from that year's auction. The production and taste of each plot are completely different. It is pursued by buyers from different countries around the world.
