FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Coffee Growing Regions
The regions of the world suitable for coffee cultivation are known as the "Coffee Belt," geographically located approximately between 25 degrees north latitude and 30 degrees south latitude on both sides of the equator. What factors affect coffee quality and flavor? The variety of coffee trees, chemical compounds in the soil, weather conditions, rainfall and sunshine duration, and the altitude where coffee is grown all have significant impacts on the final coffee flavor. These factors operate throughout various stages of coffee production, thus creating differences in the final products from coffee-growing regions worldwide.
Geographically speaking: zones are determined by temperature, forms by water. In terms of temperature: the tropical and subtropical zones among the world's five climate zones are most ideal. In terms of precipitation: areas with abundant rainfall in tropical and subtropical regions are most suitable.
The location of the global "Coffee Belt" is mainly in the areas with relatively abundant precipitation between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
The global "Coffee Belt" is divided into three major producing regions: The "Ka" (coffee) character represents: the Americas region - Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Colombia, Brazil, etc. The "Fei" character represents: the Africa region - Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Côte d'Ivoire, etc. The "Dai" (belt) character represents: the Asia region - Indonesia, India, Yunnan China, etc.
Here's a brief explanation of the Africa region. The so-called Africa region actually only has a few countries and regions growing coffee, which is caused by the particularity of Africa's geographical environment. The north has the world's largest Sahara Desert, and the south has the oldest plateau continent, making it difficult to produce a climate environment suitable for coffee cultivation. Only the countries and regions near the equator are relatively suitable for growing coffee trees, and the coffee beans produced are of very high quality.
